While I love my job, they had to drag me back kicking and screaming- not for money, but for staffing issues and to maintain the sanity of my co-workers.

I took the full 16 weeks off. Once I got back it wasn't too bad, especially since I'm freelance, but leaving in the mornings are still hard 5 months later.

I definitely benefit from work mentally, some days my husband tells me that I need to go to work because I am getting grumpy.

I totally thought I wasn't cut out to be a SAHM, but surprisingly, I've been totally loving it!! LO is 7 months old and I have no desire at all to go back to work!

Thank you all for your responses!

@kiddosc: This is what I am going through. I know I would be happy working, bringing home that paycheck, and having some adult interaction. I can't get over how much I will miss my son though.

I have been a SAHM for almost 4 years now. I have had the itch come and go the entire 4 years. I would love more adult interaction but I just cannot see myself being happy with my son in daycare. I'm 33 weeks with LO #2 so maybe I will when he/she is in school full time.

I had to go back for financial reasons after 8 weeks, but wanted to say I completely empathize with the feeling of wanting adult interaction, but also being sad to be away from LO. I know I would go crazy being a SAHM to an infant, but it's still so hard to leave him in someone else's care.

I was really happy at 3 months to go back.

Ideally though I would love not to work full time or I wish I could WAH.

I knew I wouldn't want to stay home very long. I love my job (most days) and the feeling of accomplishment, independence and use. I'm not saying SAHMs don't feel this, but my job gave me that. We made my leave last a few months longer than I had initially planned, but that was because the negotiations with my return position took a little longer than I anticipated originally.

We could probably make it work with me staying home (or my husband), but I guess we're kind of ambitious and greedy. There's a lot of things we want and we need to work toward, so that was a big driver for me wanting to go back to work.

If I hadn't planned on going back quickly, probably around 4 months I would have decided it was time to start looking for something. I was getting bored with staying home all the time, playing house by then. And missing hot coffee, bathroom breaks, adult conversation, etc.

I had the option to extend my maternity leave by a month but I didn't take it. I missed adult interaction and my coworkers!

I'm having an itch to go back to work after being a sahm for 4 months. Doing what? I wish I knew. I was a nanny for 8 yrs before having a baby. I feel stuck, but that's another post.

While I'm having that itch to work again, I get sad just thinking about being away from my son all day. I love being home with him. It is confusing!

If you weren't obligated to go back to work (income-related or another reason..), how did you know it was time to return to work?
