I personally like the idea of the individually wrapped slats, like this:

@pastemoo: did you think about a breathable bumper? I was too scared of sids to use a bumper, plus no one really uses them here. LO has got an arm or leg stuck maybe twice - now 10 months - but does end up asleep right up against the sides a lot. So for us a bumper would have been a nightmare.

I'm waiting to find out the sex..but we'll be going with basic sheets. I'm going to pick some fabric that I love and have my cousin help me make a quilt!

I also plan to buy/register for a basic colored bumper (the Carter's ones at BRU). I feel like the breathable ones aren't cushiony for head-banging. We will see!

I made the bed skirt (super simple tutorial in Young House Love), and I bought a mattress pad for $12 and 2 fitted sheets on sale for a couple dollars each from Target. I ended up buying a breathable bumper because he's good at squirming and kicking arms and legs out of the crib.

We were gifted so many blankets that I never bothered to buy any, we use all of the gifted blankets for tummy time.

As for the dust ruffle, I want something like this, but for a crib. Cutting it up and sewing it myself is an option but not at $78! I actually have a spare quilt similar to this but in a taupe (I use it as a sofa cover) so it might be possible to find one locally and on sale ... but then there's the cutting it up and sewing it together part.

I bought a crib bumper on sale at Babies R Us. I still don't have any sheets. My grandma is making a blanket, and my mom is giving us my old baby blanket (which because my little brother's). We have lots of blankets already. :)
The crib bumper is kind of "themed" but everything else will most likely be a solid color or fairly plain.

ETA: The blankets are for tummy time, not for use in the crib. ;)

Yes... we did decide to get a crib bumper--all my coworkers told me horror stories about babies getting a hand, arm, foot, or leg stuck between the slats.

I just bought a set from target. *hangs head*
Honestly though, LO is 10 months. The quilt is never in the cot (because of sids), you never see it. I am so glad i went cheap, pricey stuff would have been a total waste.

I debated getting a set for days but ended up against it since the bumper and blanket isn't recommended, even if it looks SOOO cute! I intend to supplement with sleepsacks and so I just got sheets instead:

1 Quickzip Sheet Set
2 Toppers
1 Carter's Keep Me Dry Waterproof fitted sheet
1 American Baby Waterproof topper

It was $96 total on Amazon. Those sheets got great reviews and makes it possible to change them just by unzipping the top sheet. But to really take advantage of it, it needs a waterproof topper that's just as easily changed. Whenever the waterproof topper is in the wash, I intend to use cheap Ikea waterproof squares (since I'll have a waterproof fitted sheet under it anyway).

I really hope they work! They're part of my mom's gift-pack for LO. Not as cute as the set I wanted - but a lot more practical!

@Regerberdaisy-I made the skirt with an elastic "waistband" so it kind of hugs the area below the mattress (I don't know what you call that thing, but its basically the bottom of the crib). I realized after I did it that, in reality, all i needed to do was safety pin some ribbon to the crib skirt and stretch the ribbon over the bottom of the crib and safety pin to the other side, I ended up with about 3 pieces of ribbon going across the long part of the crib, and once piece attaching the head and the foot of the crib (skirt). I hope that makes sense!!

@regerberdaisy buy a couple of packages of heat-n-bond! I sew, but sometimes when I don't feel like getting my machine out, I break out the heat-n-bond. Its pretty cheap (like 2 or 3 dollars a roll) and you just iron it onto your fabric, then fold it over, iron again and you have a perfect, no sew, seam!

I made my own crib skirt (i saw this one on pottery barn kids that I really liked. it was a white tiered, ruffle one-but it wasnt as long as I wanted) and found that it was pretty easy to do (and didn't take much time at all). I think I ended up using 6 yards of fabric (but it was ruffled and tiered) but you could probably get away with 3 yards!

I bought separates. We got a couple different sheets, a crib skirt, and breathable bumpers. A friend made a quilt for lo, but it sits on the glider because you cant put it in the bed. It wasn't worth it to me to buy a set because you don't use all the pieces.

I'm kind of with @regberadaisy - I don't care enough to go custom. Our sheets for our bed are from Kohl's and Penny's, my baby doesn't need better than that. :) I found sheets that match or sort of go with our decor. I was hoping to find peach sheets but found some brown and white polka dot and some with sea creatures on them that will work just fine.

We're going to do a crib skirt - in chocolate brown. Just something I found at BRU. For 2 sheets and the skirt, it will be about $50.

I absolutely fell in love with a bedding set, but after thinking about it for awhile, decided not to get it. I just couldn't rationalize spending the money on it (it was a little less than 200$). The only parts that came in the set that I would have actually used would have been the sheet, and the dust ruffle. The dust ruffle is just pretty, not totally necessary, the bumpers are considered dangerous now, and the comforter would have been used more as decor than bedding. In the end, I used the money that we would have spent on bedding and got a few more practical things, and bought a breathable bumper and a few sets of fitted sheets.

Now that we know what we are having I've been determined to pick out the bedding! It's been way harder than I expected! The ones I really like are the ones your can design but they are pretty pricey...like more than my crib cost! Is it worth it to spend a lot on a set? I just can't see spending so much but at the same time I feel like the bedding will be what pulls everything together in the room.

Help!
