Currently DS2 is 9.5 months and most days I want to quit so so so bad. I don't think he's getting enough milk, hasn't been for a while, it hurts, it's so inconvenient with my 3.5 yo running me ragged, I want my boobs back, etc. I was going to try to get him through "sick season" (oct-May here) but I'd be stopping in Jan when he's 1 year anyway so I guess there's no point. My other son I BFed for 15 months and he was sick CONSTANTLY. Still is. I'm so conflicted.

No idea how or when #3 is going to wean, she’s 18mo and nursing frequently and on demand. My oldest child has just turned seven so I’ve now been either nursing or pregnant since January 2012 and I’m not sure what I’m going to do with myself once I don’t have a child attached to me!

@crazydoglady: I had the realization while reading these that I’ve already stopped nursing my last baby. Now I’m nursing a toddler which is completely different thing! So while I’m not quitting tomorrow maybe I’m holding onto an idea that’s really already gone.

@bhbee: @LCTBQE: @MrsSCB: @Bluemasonjar: @MrsSCB: @josina: @justjules: @graceandjoy: @LadyDi: @RKitty: Thank you to everyone who responded with encouragement and personal experiences. The truth of the matter is, I don't terribly like breastfeeding (especially when they are this age and it involves acrobatics...ouch,) but I am much more emotional about her being my last baby, so it's bittersweet.
@Corduroy: Oh. My. Gosh. I am so glad you captured this moment.

@LCTBQE: I’m not sure about the milk, I’m going to ask at her 15m appt what they recommend. Neither of my other two liked cow milk at weaning either - my oldest took about 6 months to get used to it, and my 4yo doesn’t drink it to this day. But, they had other dairy so not sure how that changes things, since I remember the dr saying just water was fine with other dairy. Most alternative milks aren’t actually that nutritious compared to cow milk so I don’t know what they’ll suggest

@MrsSCB: yep, my kids loved formula and agree it's insulting :silly: I finally just this week (almost 14 months) managed to get LL fully off of it and onto WCM for her naptime/bedtime bottles. it took a month to transition her because she so clearly preferred the formula, woof. Grateful for it but so glad to never shell out another $30 for tub of similac, wheee.

@crazydoglady: @bhbee: hi due date mamas! just commiserating the emotional toughness of weaning that last baby, I still tear up a little when I think about it. LL weaned at 9 months back in June (perfect storm of her boredom/disinterest/shark-biting me, my supply tanking, and my period coming back--I just gave up and called it) but I really wanted it to last longer and was so sad. She, however, was totally happy. But it's such a relief to not have the constant noise in the back of your mind of having to manage the breasts :) :)
@bhbee: what are you going to do in lieu of WCM? Will she just have water, or is a bedtime nursing session really important for her?
@Bluemasonjar: yay congrats!! Well done.

@Bluemasonjar: I wish I'd done it with my son. I feel like I ended up wishing away a lot of time just looking forward to being done with the pumping. And my daughter just sucked down the formula without a care in the world, like she didn't even notice a difference. I'm almost offended :silly:

@MrsSCB: I supplemented with formula for DS1 after months of fighting to pump enough and introduced it sooner with DS2 as a result. I love your sentiment "I fully believe breastfeeding should be a mutually appreciated experience." Very well said!

Literally weaning DS2 as of 2 days ago! He is 13 months and I went on a business trip last week and didn't leave milk and DH said he did not miss it at bedtime or in the morning. I brought a hand pump and got barely an ounce which confirmed that my production is at a minimum (which I suspected). I was away again for 2 nights at the start of this week and have not pumped and felt zero discomfort.

He is my last baby and I nursed DS1 for 15 months so expected to go longer but it felt like a natural place to wean and I'm happy to have the time back in the mornings and I still snuggle him extra at bed time.

My second is almost seven months old, and I’ve just introduced formula so I can pump less at work. I never did that with my first, but I hated pumping soooo much. I don’t plan to fully wean until at least a year, though. All that to say, if you’re over it and it’s no longer working for you, then it’s not longer working period. I fully believe breastfeeding should be a mutually appreciated experience. 13 months is amazing!

Weaning my second (and probably last) was so hard. I felt very much “over it” as well but our nursing time was also always so special so I had a lot of conflicting feelings. Finally, a few months after she turned 2, I had to leave for a few days for an out of state conference and took that time to go cold turkey on nursing.

I still sometimes get a little sad that I will probably never nurse another baby but I’m guessing I’m going to “mourn” a lot of last stages all the way till they move out of the house :silly:

Well, my 2nd isn't my last but I thought she was :silly:

We nursed till she was over 2.5; and was really forced to stop since I was pregnant and nursing became increasingly painful. If I didn't get pregnant, I really don't know when I would've put a hard stop on it since I thought she was my last and wanted to savor this amazing nursing relationship forever!

But you are right, I totally wanted my boobs back too. But I think life was just so much better as long as I didn't have to pump, so I didn't mind nursing that much.

My baby is 11.5 months I've been debating weaning soon... I want my boobs back... I kind of want to see how long we can nurse for though and let her wean on her own.

We still nurse on demand so sometimes she comes for a quick snack and other times an actual meal. I think though I'm going to work towards only nursing at home first and see where that goes.

So im just here to commiserate I guess and see what others say!

Right there with you ... I’m not ready to drop yet but I’m kinda over it (14.5m) ... and then sometimes not. Right now I’m usually nursing 3x per day and thinking of going to just morning and night (I think she will want the morning one the longest). My middle weaned around this time on his own. My oldest went to 18m and then weaned herself (down to just morning then). Trying to decide if I’ll wait that long. My 14mo is allergic to cow milk so that is making me more inclined to hold on.

Then simultaneously I want my body back but am super sad I’ll never have another nursing baby!!

I am on month 13 of breastfeeding my last baby and I am finding myself being "over" it. The first feed of the day always takes the longest while we are desperately trying to get out of the house. I know she doesn't "need" it, but I don't know how I feel about ending it now since she's my last. Any thoughts/experiences/commiseration?
