I am paralyzed by the idea of sorting out what to keep or get rid of, so I have saved literally everything unless it is super stained or badly worn. I figure if we don't have more LOs or if we never have another girl, I will deal with it down the road!

this is a much harder process than it seems! LO#1 boy, LO#2 girl. 2 1/2 yrs apart and born mostly in the same season. I kept all the sleepers and unisex clothing for DD and a couple sentimental pieces. Picked out all of my favorite boy outfits and shipped them to my friend that was having a boy across the country. Donated the rest to a family having a little boy. now as for what I'm doing with DD's clothes as she outgrows them? no clue! (as I hoard them away in the spare room...)

Mine are close in age but born in opposite seasons. However, #2 is smaller than #1 so I was actually able to use almost everything for #2. I would hold onto everything at this point until your second is actually in that size. I was surprised at how much I could re-use and saved a lot of money!

I just went through a ton of LO's baby stuff this weekend. My process was:
- Did I love it on her and would I use it again if we had another girl? Keep.
- Everything else - Sell, donate, or trash, depending on brand and condition.

I got rid of probably half her old stuff and feel so good. So much of it was gifted and just not my style. I know if we have another, we'll get tons of gifts again, so I didn't feel bad getting rid of it.

@sorrycharlie: if its not stained or worn I keep it!

I get lots of hand me downs from my nephew for DS who is 6 years older than my DS and none of it is out of style - then again its all t-shirts and pants so there isn't anything "stylish" about it.

Honestly, i got so overwhelmed with this process that I decided to space vac down everything and store it under the bed. I had a box to give to a friend, a box of sentimental items to keep (stuff i've made, bday outfits, coming home outfits, and favorites) and then the rest I tried to sell. Some i did, most i couldn't. So i just vacc'ed it down and will hold onto it until a couple of my friends have kids, then give it to them. It's not really worth enough to consign and I don't want to mess with those events to make maybe $50, and i have friends who want to have kids soon...and we have the space. So i flattened them all (they all fit in a big rubbermaid tote or two, stacked) and shoved them under the bed downstairs. I'll have a very large clothes sorting project in a few years. BUT i'm hoping that once we're done having kids, I can either donate the lot or know someone who's having kids and just say "here you go" and give them a few trash bags worth of clothes like friends have done with me!

Keep - anything that I love love love and cannot part with and pajamas in great condition (HA, Carters sleepers, Lands End sleepers)

Consign - good condition brand name clothing that were not my favorite items

Donate - Circo, Garanimals clothing that are in good condition but usually 'play clothes'

Since #2 is a girl I pulled out the 'keep' boxes and sorted into special items that I want to hold on to from LO 1, items that baby girl can wear, and items to consign.

Since this baby will be our last I will keep my favorites for her and consign the rest.

Ideally I would like to only have one rubbermaid bin of sentimental clothing for each child.

I just want to say that just last night I was in our storage unit (we live in an apt) and I have plastic bins full of infant clothes from newborn to 6 months. Since we have them in a storage unit that we pay for and I don't know if/when we are having another it feels silly to take up so much room for them. But I can't bear to get rid of it because it is so sentimental AND because it would suck to start from square one if we do have another boy! I'm torn!

@hellocupcake: Our local Goodwill made pulp then paper then beautiful cards out of "un-sale able" clothing. They employed people with varying degrees of handicaps that struggled holding a job elsewhere.

I imagine other Goodwill stores do something similar.

There's a large gap between D and M. D's clothes used to be passed to my bff's boys. Now, I save pants if they're not holey and nice shirts. T shirts and shirts with characters go to my bff because by the time M is big enough to wear them, some other character will be "in".

So, we're one and done, and I knew that we were before my son was even born, BUT, I have packed away and saved my son's entire newborn layette. I couldn't and still can't part with it...unless it was super stained.

Now, my son is older and I buy less and his stuff is worn when he's done with it. Sometimes I do make mistakes when I shop and my son won't wear it for whatever reason...those I pass on.

I'm struggling with this too! I toss things that are stained/worn, but we still have tons. I recently sold several lots of items in sizes my younger DD has passed (up to 9 months) that I just plain don't like or am tired of seeing, but that honestly wasn't THAT much.

Do you save outerwear? My kids have really nice North Face, Gap, and Patagonia things with high resale value, but since we may have more kids I'm saving them for now....and with clothes, I'm trying to convince myself to sell the things with better resale value (Boden, Hanna, Gap)...but of course those are my favorites!! Maybe once I KNOW I'm finished having kids it'll be easier. But I don't kniw, my sister's kids are 11 and 13 and she still had totes if nice baby clothes she let me go through!

Currently I'm keeping everything of Xander's that's not stained or have holes in it! The seasonal clothes might not work out and so I'll pass them along once I know, but otherwise, I keep! I'm guessing as they get older though, Logan will get sick of hand-me-downs and I won't do it as much.

I just made a huge pile of 2T and winter stuff to pack away. I was trying to sort as I went, and donate stuff that would be waaay out of style in two years when DD2 fits, or is super worn, or has been worn by 4 kids already (some of our hand me downs..lol). but some stuff I get attached to and have memories with..weird, I guess. it's clothing.

I have an easier time sorting infant clothes (when I found out DD2 was a girl, I went through all the old clothes) because some stuff wouldn't work based on season! but once they're older it's all sort of fair game.

if you sort for a younger sibling (or family member/friend), how do you decide what to keep and pack away for a younger child, and what to just donate/toss?
