We went cold turkey one weekend while we were away. I am telling you DS was a bottle fanatic. It worked out for us because if he couldn't see it we could couldn't break down and offer. He LOVES his sippy cup now.

Cold turkey for daytime, with one bedtime bottle at 12 months. Once he adapted to cups we ditched the bedtime bottle 3-4 weeks later.

It helped that he saw older kids at daycare drinking from cups during the day.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: ohmygosh how awful! :(

@fancyfunction: I think that might be what we have to do. He is sick right now with a virus and double ear infection (boo) so we are going to wait until he is better and then pack them up :) Fingers crossed!

Ditching the bottle really sucked for us. Chloe could and did use a sippy cup, but her bottle was her lovey -- she's cling on to it like a stuffed animal and would freak out exorcist style if we took it away. She'd sleep with it (empty) and hold on all night long.

Her freak outs were enough to scare us into letting her keep it. Then one day, we were like EFF THIS and threw those suckers away.

The Nuk sippy cups helped with the transition. The spout was bottle-like and helped her, but the first few nights were so awful I had to leave the house while my husband did bedtime. It really was difficult.

It was only last spring/summer!! I want to say by the end of May we ditched the bottles, so she was.. 18 months?! Gah. So awful!!

We went cold turkey at 12 mo but she was already used to the straw cup for water. The first few days she only drank only a little milk but finally got the hang of it when she didn't see any more bottles coming.

DS refused to drink milk (of any kind) out of a cup when we were still BF but would drink water just fine. Once we stopped BF we quit the bottle cold turkey and he had no problem. He never really liked the removable valve sippy cups so we took out the valve or got the ones he had to bite to drink from.

We ditched the bottles one at a time. First his mid-day one. One he got used to it (about 4 days), we dropped the morning one. After a good week, we dropped the nighttime one. He takes 3 straw cups of milk a day now. He's 13m and we started around 12m.

@Mrs. Lion: Absolutely! You're the mom, follow your gut.

Those numbers are absurd, by the way. My ped said you need to limit WCM intake to no more than 16-20 ounces/day.

On water (and this is all just my opinion, so feel free to ignore), I personally think it's good to start a water drinking habit early, so I would put out a cup of water in his play area every day. If he doesn't drink any, but is still having good diapers, so what? But you are offering and exposing him to water, so maybe one day he'll start drinking it.

Cold turkey

He always drank water from a sippy cup (mainly straw ones). The milk took a couple of weeks, but after about 2-3 weeks he was drinking 3 sippy cups a day.

If he's thirsty enough, he will drink. I think mine just had to realize the bottles were not coming back.

@septca: @autumnlove: I totally don't care at all if he drinks WCM...but he won't drink water at all, even from his bottle. So I feel like I will fight that battle later (since we just switched to milk anyway). I want to avoid juice completely if I can.... he eats lots of yogurt, applesauce, and fruits and veggies, so I know he gets water from those foods. As long as his diapers stay the same, can I just follow his lead? I looked up "fluid intake" for toddlers today and it said some crazy high 44 ounce number (16-32 WCM). LO has NEVER had more than 32 ounces of bm/formula, and it was typically between 22 and 24 ounces...44 seems impossible to me, especially from a cup.

Also, I totally second what @autumnlove: said. DD drinks water plus about 6-8 ounces of WCM per day, so her intake is nowhere near her BM intake.

It took a while for DD to go from drinking a few sips here and there to really drinking out of a straw cup, but now (13.5 mo) she's a champ. We ditched one bottle at a time, and at the end she was only getting a bottle at bedtime (that bottle was necessary for weaning). After about a week, she realized that she could get way more milk, way faster from a cup than from a bottle, so she started rejecting the bottle. Fine by me!

Went cold turkey and it took a few days for her to really get the hang of it. Our Dr also told us not to worry about matching WCM intake ounce for ounce for bm/formula.

Lo is now 12.5 months old and we have successfully moved from formula to milk....now we are ready to move away from the bottles. We are skipping the traditional spill proof sippy cups that have a valve since I have heard that functionally they work like a bottle anyway.. we have straw cups and spoutless cups and a few take and toss style that don't have a valve.

Lo knows how to use the cups. He can tip them up himself and he takes a sip or two at a time but then throws them down. He won't drink any considerable amount. He can't use the straw cup yet although we are continuing to practice...

So my question...did you just go cold turkey on the bottles? Can I trust that he will drink enough if he is thirsty? He is a really good eater, but I worry that he won't drink enough and will become dehydrated.

What worked for you?
