DH and I disagreed with DD (taking the same sides as you and your DH). In the end we used a combination of the methods based upon how long the silence between crying episodes was.

I did it sort of the way your husband suggested - I kind of went with my gut feeling. If she was wailing for 2 minutes and then started to settle down but then 3 minutes later started fussing, I would go in (or not go in) depending on the sounds of her crying.

Does LO self-soothe? Do you use a pacifier?

@MsMini: @HeatherlovesKenny: the recommendation is between 4 and 6 months, when they are ready to sleep through the night. Some do it even earlier or later, but it all depends on the baby. I have friends who held off until 8-9 months when they couldn't take it any more, but had aharder time with it.

@erinpye: LO became a great sleeper after implementing a routine and helping her to sleep on her own. I was always able to put her down with a few minutes of rocking and was relieved I didn't have to do cio...until it became this 2 hour battle every time I left the room!

We didn't do it at all. We started a sleep routine at 8 weeks and because of it, she's gone down fairly easily since getting used to it. On the nights she doesn't, I'm willing to rock her or pat her for as long as it takes. Now that she's a bit over 6 months, she is more aware and fights sleep sometimes, so we'll let her fuss for about 60-90 seconds, but if she doesn't settle or actually cries, we go in and comfort her. She's mostly a good sleeper and for me, I just couldn't handle the stress of CIO.

@HeatherlovesKenny: CIO is generally not recommended for babies under 6 months of age.

We originally did CIO at 4.5 months, and it worked after 3 days. A lot of people have more success doing it in the earlier months than at the 8-9 month mark. LO is 6 months right now...i don't know what happened to my good sleeper!!!!! :(

With my first, we did it how your husband suggested. We might have to try CIO with DD in the next month if her terrible sleep keeps up so I'm interested to know what others do too. How old is your LO, btw? Just curious because DD is almost 4.5 months and DH says its waaay to early. He will pick her up instantly once she starts fussing.

DH and i are arguing over how to do cry-it-out right now.

Our pediatrician said to go at 5, 10, 15 minute intervals after straight crying, not whining. DH feels that it has to literally be 5 minutes of straight crying, otherwise he will reset the timer before going up to her. I feel that if she cries, takes a break and the starts crying again, it should all be counted in those "5 minutes".

Who is right?
