Cold turkey on the bottles and gradually transitioned from formula to whole milk. He was down to about 3 bottles a day, 3 meals a day, and no night wakings for food. He had been getting a sippy of water for months.

I did 1/4 milk and 3/4 formula, then half and half, and finally 3/4 milk and 1/4 formula. He did greatly reduce the amount he drank for about a week. I didn't worry because he ate yogurt and cheese so I figured he was fine. After a couple of weeks, his drinking went back to normal. He never woke up to eat at night.

We're in the middle of this transition too (EBM instead of formula) and I started by mixing EBM with hemp milk and slowly increasing the ratio until she was drinking all hemp milk during the day. I'm going to transition her over to straw cups next, but for that one, I will probably do it cold turkey. She drinks water out of a straw cup already so I am hoping she'll give up her bottles pretty easily. Btw, I don't think your pediatrician meant just drop everything, right? Ours definitely wanted her off bottles, but she can still get milk, she just needs to use a cup.

We switched cold turkey. She has access to as much water in a sippy as she wants, we offer milk in a sippy at meals, and I do nurse at bedtime and wakeup (with the occasional overnight nursing session). She still doesn't like milk out of the sippy cup, but she's been drinking water out of it since she was about nine months old.

We switched to a sippy at 9 months (with bm switched to WCM at a year). We used the nuby transition sippy and he had no issues

Cold turkey, we tried to do gradual, but she then would hold out until after nap/before bed knowing she got a bottle. 3-4 rough days and she was over it. She loved cold milk and the sippy so that helped. She would cry more before bed for a baba, but eventually just gave it up and slept great.

@ladybee: Give him milk (does he like it) first thing with a sippy and make a banana. That way he gets something in his stomach and then he can still have breakfast at day care.

@Smurfette: He typically gets breakfast at school at 8:30. I didn't even think of doing it right away. Duh! I guess I should just amp up his food to make up for the loss of formula.

Cold turkey. Started on a Saturday and just replaced her bottles with a sippy cup. I think she was around 12.5 months old. It took her a few days but now she loves her sippy cups and her WCM!

ETA: It did not affect her sleep.

@ladybee: nope!

She snacks replaced the day bottles. Then we gave bigger breakfast and dinner. But towards the end, she wasn't into her night bottles. She would only drink 2-4ozs anyway.

I dropped one bottle a week and just replaced it with a sippy. I decided to drop bottles before I dropped the breastmilk he was getting, so he was still getting BM in his sippy - same amount at the same times, just a sippy instead of a bottle. Once he was fully bottle weaned, I started the transition off of BM by mixing.

During the transition of dropping bottles, he DID drink less milk, but after 2-3 weeks of just getting sippies, he went back to drinking more again. And it didn't seem to affect his overnight sleep - he probably made up for it with solids.

Good luck!

Cold turkey!

Well she dropped her afternoon bottles at 11.5 months. She was teething and just wasn't eating a lot so we went with it. I sent milk for lunch in a sippy and then sent snacks instead of the bottles. Two days after her 1st birthday, cold turkey, dropped the bottles. Gave her milk and breakfast first thing.

At our 12 month check up today our pediatrician said to drop bottles and formula. He made it sound so simple but I just can't wrap my mind around it.

How did you do it? How old was your LO? Did you drop all bottles? What did you do if your LO woke up in the MOTN hungry?

Right now LO gets a bottle at wake up (6am), 10am, 2pm, and bed time (7pm). Plus he gets 3 meals. I am scared that my sleeping baby will disappear if I take away bottles.
