I had c-sections both times and would have been fine going to consignment sales. The first time I took the baby to a consignment sale right around 2-3 weeks and it was fine.

Consignment sales are so great!!

I was out and about, by myself, the first day home from the hospital. Luckily, my DS went 3 hours between each feeding so it worked out. I'm a very antsy person and can't stay cooped up in the house. That being said, I would.

@petunia354: oh, wow. Nicu dr said to expect that they be in there for 6 weeks but I've heard from other moms with 33-34 weekers that they stayed about 2 weeks.

I can see how bringing in a cooler and a diaper bag would be tough.

@bluestriped bee: He was there only 3 weeks but the lugging of a cooler with the previous nights pumped milk plus a diaper bag with all my pump parts and bottles back and forth to the NICU everyday really slowed down my recovery. But I was also doing it 100% by myself since DH had to work. I suspect that if you have some help it might not be so bad. I also had a really rough time with the hormonal changes that happen pp but I know it doesn't affect everyone the same!

Fingers crossed that you breeze through recovery!!

I had a csec with my first and at three weeks I felt fine. But the doctor didn't want me driving until about week 4 to make sure my stitches/scars healed properly.

You would also have to bring some sort of basket and carry it with you while you shop. Again, I would be careful of your stitches from carrying a heavy load.

My close friend had twins and her stitches tore 2-3weeks pp. She had to leave her babies and go back into surgery bc her incision opened and they were worried about infection. Doctor told her she was doing too much at home and that she truly needs to rest postpartum to recover.

I should add, I brought my son with me to do errands and just breastfed wherever. We were lucky that he had a good latch right away though.
Even if you don't go to the sale, it might be good to think of places that you can bring the babies to get out of the house and be able to nurse and change diapers without too much stress. I loved taking my son to the bookstore, the coffee shop, restaurants, etc. anywhere where we could sit easily once we were done walking around.
We didn't have much luck using a cover but most people were pro breastfeeding and if I felt shy, or cold, I tucked a very thin scarf over the top of my boob.

Is there anyway that your husband can bring the twins and hang out near by so you can nurse and or pump but still shop by yourself?
I had one, vaginally, and after the first week at home I found I did better mentally if I got out of the house to do errands. It helped me feel more like myself. Or maybe he could keep one at home with a bottle and you could baby wear one and keep them with you so that you don't have to pump as much?

I went to book club when LO was 3 weeks old. It was heaven. Of course, I wasn't walking around a ton or doing anything strenuous. I brought my breast pump and pumped before I went home. At that point we were supplementing with formula though so having enough milk to leave was no issue.

LO1 - I still felt terrible at 3 weeks. I didn't tear particularly "badly" but recovery was just a pain and even everyday tasks were laborious. Plus, breast feeding issues and it was round the clock.

LO2 - I felt great! I still tore and had lingering soreness, esp at my epidural site, but by 3 weeks was doing fine. I didn't really venture out much, though..

I've been out and about this time with a toddler and a baby since 1 week pp. I def would go at three weeks pp.

With my first I was on pain meds for two weeks and third week was when I first started feeling ok and still wasn'toit and about w my singleton. I would just play it by ear. But venture to guess that w ftm exhaustion and twins, you won't be able to make it.

I had a c-section. Physically I FELT fine at 3 weeks. But I was still bleeding pretty extensively and was on restricted movement (so walking around shopping would've been a bad idea). Also breastfeeding takes forever then (at least it did for me). Add two babies into the mix and I don't know how you could possibly find time to go between feeding the babies.

I felt great. I was out for a girls night at a bar, in normal clothes and heels at 3 weeks pp. We walked around downtown and stayed out doing karaoke.

I brought a manual pump in my purse and stored my pumped milk in a cooler in my friend's car.

That being said, I've never given birth to twins and I've never had a c section.

@bluestriped bee: Well, my husband and family helped us move, but no moving company. Let's just say that my maternity leave completely sucked since I was in a new area and didn't know anyone! And, my employer thought that I was still in town...

We had a lot of stuff packed up prior to having my DD. She was 10 days late, so I had lots of time

@2PeasinaPod: Good to hear this, as well.

@T.H.O.U.: Ah, lots of good points. Yeah, I was going to hold off on buying any more clothes until the babies arrive but I'm thinking its a better idea to get clothes now before they come. I'll see if I can find a local mom with b/g twins that I can buy her newborn and 0-3 month clothes. Since this consignment sale is coming up, they might be able to sell me their stuff instead of at the sale. Anything I don't use, I should be able sell when I myself start selling at consignment sales. Thanks!

Even though there are less crowds at the presale these things are still nutty. You are bending to go through stacks of clothes, standing in line to check out etc. I think if you could arrange to bring someone it would work. Someone to help hold your bag while you shop. Or to stand in line while you go pump etc.

We typically plan to spend about 3 hours plus travel and Peking time at these sales. Remember you'll have to go through boys clothes section and girls clothes section.

@bluestriped bee: the hospital grade pumps are great at getting your supply going. I had my emergency C-section and LO ended up in the NICU due to respiratory issues, so I couldn't get over there right away. He only spent 2 days there, but the pump worked really well at getting things started. Everyone is different, but my mom always told me that I would never be able to breastfeed because she couldn't, and by 3 weeks, I was producing 5oz/breast at each pump session. So you never know until you're there!

Ha, I moved 2 hours away 3 weeks after my C-section. I think that it would depend how far away the sale is. I say to sign up for it and just make a game time decision regarding how you are feeling. Hope you and the babies are doing well!
