My aunt sold it to my mom for $1, and it lasted me a few months. Oh my gosh I loved that purple car! I paid for maintenance and gas, my parents paid for insurance. I was 19 or 20.</p> <p>My second car was financed. I put a few thousand down, and my mom co-signed the loan. I paid gas and was responsible for all maintenance but my parents paid the insurance. I had this car for a few years.</p> <p>My third car I bought myself. I also paid for the gas and insurance that came with it. I had saved up quite a bit for a down payment on a car by the time I was sixteen. I financed the rest of the purchase price with my mom as a cosigner and made the payments myself every month. They would come pick me up and drop me off so I could get to and from college from home. And I had a meal plan so I ate at the college's dining hall so I didn't NEED groceries. But there was also a little market within walking distance, so if I needed to buy food stuff, I could purchase it there. During my sophomore and junior years, I had a friend who had a car, so we'd just bum rides off her for most things. And then senior year I actually did have my car on campus because I had an internship that I needed to be able to get to. I started working the DAY I turned 16. Happy birthday to me right? I also got my permit. My dad, stepmom, and sister took turns driving me to work or letting me drive to practice. I had already saved a bit of money (I had a savings account since I was 5) but I basically saved almost all of my paycheck. I didn't have anywhere to go after all. 6 moths later when I was ready to take my drivers test my dad told me he would take a loan out for me to match whatever I had saved to get a decent car. </p> <p>So we did. After that I continued to work and go to school and drove myself. I paid for my own gas, paid the loan payments on my car (which were small), and paid the insurance every month too. </p> <p>Actually now that I think about it I think I split the insurance payment in half with my dad. My sister had got in a wreck and jacked our insurance up and I couldn't afford it. I didn't have much spending money left after bills but I still had a little to enjoy myself. </p> <p>I worked at a grocery store making minimum wage as a cashier. I think I averaged about 25 hours a week then. That's also where I met DH! But, they had veto power so we couldn't buy an unsafe clunker. My neighbor ended up selling us his old car for really cheap. They paid insurance and I paid gas, but my senior year I drove my little sister to school with me, saving them the bus cost, so they paid for gas.
