With my first, I started labor early Friday morning but they weren't close enough to go to the hospital until Friday night. At that point, my husband was home to take me. Baby came early Sunday morning.

With my second, I started labor early Tuesday morning and had my mom take me in around noon. At that point, I was 4 cm and they gave me the option to leave and come back later. I went out and grabbed lunch, had my husband come get me, and we went back together around 3 pm. Baby came shortly after midnight.

I'm not so worried about #3 because I seem to just have long labors, but I'm most worried about child care since we no longer live near family. I can always take an uber to the hospital but I have to make sure the kids are buttoned down first.

With my first I had just returned from the hospital after a bleeding scare. They declared me fine and not in labor. As I walked in the door my water broke. DH drove me back to the hospital and I had J 2 hours and 2 minutes later.

With R I had a membrane sweep and did lots of walking and was achy. I woke up to blood and told my husband it was time to go (no contractions yet). My child care arrangements fell through, so we brought J to the hospital with us. Contractions started as I walked into the hospital. Baby was born 2 hours later, after maybe an hour of timeable contractions, about an hour after J's grandparents arrived to take him home.

With my first, my water broke at 10pm and contractions started at 2am. My husband drove me to the hospital at around 9am.

My twins were induced. They didn't have a bed available for me that morning, so we wound up going to the hospital at 11pm instead of 8am as originally planned. My husband was with me all day and we kept calling to check in and see if we could finally go in. I was so nervous, I was terrible company for him!!!

First went into labour around 5am on a Sunday so my husband drove (we are about 45 mins from hospital).

2 and 3 were schedule c sections. If I went early And my husband was working I would have been screwed. Haha. He can’t leave work until someone is there to cover him... so near the end he had people on call that agreed to be available if anything happened. In that case a friend probably would have drove me in... with my third my previous section scar was very thin and they didn’t want me to labour on it at all so I wouldn’t have been able to wait for him to get home and then make the drive in. 😬

LO1 - Scheduled induction so easy peasy. I took the day off of work, packed leisurely and had a nice big dinner before going in!

LO2 - Apparently I infected myself from my water slowly leaking over the weekend. Took off work that morning not knowing I really was also in labor. But LO1 was already off to daycare so DH & I left around noon, and for LO1 it was business as usual since my mom picked her up anyway

LO3 - Got another month to go; hoping it works out!!

FYI hospital is about 20-30 min from my house.

This was a big worry of mine with my second. I took an Uber. Contractions picked up when I woke up in the morning. I was pretty sure it was the real deal, and since I'd had a fast labor with my first I decided not to wait. I took an Uber to the hospital while my husband took our older child to daycare. I walked around the hospital for over an hour once I got there to get things to pick up further before heading to triage, which gave DH a chance to arrive. But if things had accelerated more quickly, I wanted to be there...

@greencraftycello: I’m with @LCTBQE: on inductions...same goes for a membrane sweep. I suggest you share your fears with your OB, and if the OB is near the hospital, consider a embrace sweep followed by lunch and a walk (near the hospital) at your 38/ 39 week appointment. This sent me into pretty fast and furious labor w/DD2 after having an emergency induction with #1. #3 was an early planned induction and while there was stress around her health, the childcare/getting to the hospital part was a huge relief.

i was/am very grateful that all 4 of my babies decided to begin labor in the late evening and were all born in the wee hours of the next morning, so my husband could drive us to the hospital. i'm especially thankful for #3 as she was delivered almost exactly 2 hours after my first contraction, so we definitely wouldn't have made it to the hospital if it had been during the work day.
perhaps you can have a few back up drivers lined up just incase? <3 hope it goes smoothly for you! <3

@greencraftycello: What's your childcare situation with your first, do you have daycare or a neighbor/friend? I had this problem exactly facing my second delivery, and I was really nervous about going into labor during the day and having to take a cab alone from the NJ suburbs into Manhattan--lots of fear fantasies about an Uber driver delivering my baby in the Holland Tunnel. Ultimately I decided that what I'd do was call an Uber at the first sign of repeated contractions, even like 15 minutes apart, and just deal with any false alarms as "better safe than sorry" and laugh it off if I had to go back home.

What ended up happening is that at 38 weeks I started begging my OBs for an elective induction, which they granted me on my due date, and it was seriously a dream delivery. I recommend that method if you/your doctors are at all open to it :)

With the first I drove! DH has had a couple drinks with dinner. We went home for a while and he drove home and then drove us back later when we went.

Second time I drove again. But I was at the doctor for something else and ended up with an emergency csection, so I wasn’t in labour.

First I was induced.
Second was in the morning so DH drove.

If DH is at work and I need to go in the middle of the day this time I’ll have my dad (my mom would probably get to stressed) or MIL drive.

With our first I went into labor around midnight, we left for the hospital about 6am. Had baby at 5pm

Our second I had mild early labor all day. About 4 things started getting more intense. 445 I called my husband, he got home at 515. We left for the birth center at 6, arrived 620, baby in arms at 705.

I would have a backup plan for meeting there if your labor gets intense while he is at work. Although if my husband had worked farther away I would have called him earlier I think

First baby, dh came home from work when labor started in earnest but we had a long time to go. So no big time worries even though he didn’t work close by.

Second, I was more worried about everything but figured I’d have another long labor. Nope, not long but it all happened at night so no worries on driving there, just childcare.

Third I was induced so no problem! It was a major perk to have no concerns about childcare or logistics.

Can you take an Uber/cab/etc if you’re worried about the timing? Then maybe you and dh could arrive at the same time? Or could he work remotely more often during that time?

My water broke at 8 am while I was home and my husband was at work 40 minutes away. I called him to come pick me up and he drove me to the hospital that was 20 minutes away. While he was driving home from work to get me, I gathered the hospital bags by the door, feed the pets, ate a snack, and just tried to relax.

How did you get to the hospital when you went into labor?

With our first baby, I started having contractions in the middle of the night, and they weren't close enough together to leave until 6 AM, so my husband was home and drove me to the hospital.

I am having a little anxiety this time around, because we moved and my husband's job is 55 minutes away from our house instead of 5, and we also live an hour from the hospital I am supposed to deliver at. I am worried I will go into labor during the day when he is at work.
