I won't be a SAHM mum but I did have a conversation with work about going back part time. I knew I wanted to do part time before LO arrived but I never communicated it to work so I was nervous about them saying no, luckily it went really well and they were very understanding. My manager was very understanding and HR and the big boss had no issues either, so sometimes it goes much better than you think!

@travelingbrit: I was really pleased with how it went! Btw, I gave 2 weeks notice. And I had written procedures for all of my work before I left on leave. They had a temp covering my desk and they ended up just hiring her on.

When I went on maternity leave it was with the expectation that I would be a SAHM after but I didn't communicate that to work. I ended up calling my supervisor and letting her know that I decided to stay home with our son for the time being but that I really had enjoyed my time with the company. It went really well. She totally understood and everything was fine. I didn't have to pay anything back from my leave benefits.

@Foodnerd81: I was thinking of this also, trying to get a nanny while I work at home. It's hard though! And if I was there I would just want to do it all myself.

@Foodnerd81: yeah i helped my boss with something Fri, (he needed some analysis i did before i left) and it took me an hour to get it done.Although SO seems to think it would be good for me to work from home vs SAHM, the only way it would work is if I could work those hours whenever during the week, or I agree to get a set number of projects done per week.

I personally would rather quit altogether and try freelance web design more often. Its not my profession but I usually do 3-4 web projecs per year, and that could be lucrative if i did it more often.

@kml636: @travelingbrit: It depends on the company, but a lot of companies require proof of childcare of some sort to allow you to officially work from home. I don't think I'd be able to work from home without a babysitter or some kind of childcare, though I guess if they didn't care what 20 hours you were working and you didn't have calls, it wouldn't matter as much .

@kml636: thats what i would like to do. My work is telecommute friendly but my immediate boss doesnt like it. Im so scared t even bring it up and i agree.....finding childcare is frightening!

I'm in the same situation and I called my boss after 7 weeks and told her I wanted a part time and work from home schedule. I'm hoping, if it is approved, I will only go in the office one day a week and work 12 hours at home throughout the week so only a total of 20 hrs. She had no problem with it but the big bosses kind of are balking, so we'll see. I have to decide what I"m going to do if they say I can work 20 hours only in the office. I just am so stressed about finding good daycare, even part time.

@Foodnerd81: thats exactly how I feel. I did tie up all lose ends when i left but instead of replacing me with a temp they split my duties among my coworkers since i woul be "back soon".

@KissMeCait: My employee handbook technically says that I would be responsible for that. Not sure if it would be enforced in theory but we have the money set aside in case. Iv never heard of it happening IRL though

@KissMeCait: Oh yeah-- I've heard of that on here, but never in real life. I am going to ask my HR rep what happens if I change my mind about coming back just to make sure.

I've heard of women having to pay back their mat leave benefits from doing this (taking the paid leave through their employer and quitting immediately after). You should probably check to see if there are any repercussions.

I'm really interested in responses to this. I will be in the same situation after LO gets here-- I'm 90% sure I won't go back but I'm leaving my options open. What I THINK I will do is ride out the paid portion of my leave (first 6-8 weeks of 12 weeks total) and after that, come in and let them know one way or the other-- most likely that I'm not coming back. They will already have mat coverage through 12 weeks at least, so that gives them time to find someone permanent. I also plan to tie everything up that I can before I go, since I know I'm prob not going back.
The difference for us is I don't love my job-- I like it enough, but I've been thinking of a career change anyway, so I don't think I'll go back to the same industry when I do go back to work eventually anyway. I really like my coworkers though and want to do right by them with telling them whether I'm coming back, but it's more important to me to have the options I need.

I left my options open at work and took 3 months maternity leave
A) because i needed my medical insurance and
B) in case i wanted to return to work

I love my job, my boss and my coworkers but i cant bear the thought of leaving LO and I need to have the discussion with work in the next week or so. I would be open to working from home pt.

For those of you that quit during your leave, how many weeks notice did you give?
Did you go back in to tie up loose ends?
How did the conversation go?

Help! Im freaking out.
