We bought a potty around 15 months because DS was pooping consistently at the same time very day. The first three days we sat him on it he pooped! Then, he figured out what we were up to and wouldn't do it anymore.

Fast forward in time! Around 26 months we really wanted to get the potty training rolling so we would leave the potty sitting out in the living room so he could see it/get used to it. I really think he knew what he was supposed to do, but wouldn't do it. When we finally got down to business with serious potty training last month at 30 months, it was a breeze. He figured out pee literally right away and has only had one accident at school, the first day I took him there in underwear. Poop took a little longer, maybe 2 weeks. He had two poop accidents and would also poop in his diaper right before or after naps. But, he now knows and will either go by himself or tell us when we are out.

I guess the benefit of waiting so long to potty train is that he was ready and he got it really fast, so much less work overall for us.

@prettylizy: Very much. If you aren't sure if she is for you, consider listening to one or two of her online radio shows here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/ohcrap to get a feel for her. I like that she doesn't rush the process and that it is a generally non-reward based approach since it is basically changing a routine. I wasn't raised with performance-based rewards so a lot of the methods that encouraged sticker or food rewards just wasn't quite to my taste.

@pelikila: She seems so 'normal' for an expert in something. So I'm guessing you'd recommend her book? lol!

My very firm belief is to let your toddler lead you. We bought a potty around that time (when my daughter was seeing other children potty training) and just let her play with it and sit on it as she wishes. Lately (23 months) she's been a lot more interested in telling us when she needs to use it, when she's just pooped, etc. So we just go with her lead.

we introduced a potty seat when LO was around 12 months old. She was refusing to poop in her diaper so we had no choice. we put her on there first thing in the morning, right before bed time and sometimes during the day. she always goes. When she is about 18 months that is when we will start actively trying to potty train but she may have trained herself by then

We waited until we were ready to potty train C and followed Jamie Glowacki's process: http://www.jamieglowacki.com/. C was 19 months and it took a good week for him to "get it" but we are one month shy of C being potty trained for one year and I am so thankful. We did night and day training at the same time so it was a solid month of some intensive work but it was awesome.

We had lots of potty parties (clapping and sometimes treats when she went). We also had potty parties for ourselves - LO loved clapping when she heard us go potty (ok kinda weird but she always follows me in the bathroom anyways). We had frequent visits, read stories, watched youtube clips, stuff to encourage her to tell us when she had to go. We didn't push, if she didn't want to sit we didn't force the issue though.

@Sammyfab: Yeah, DH and I weren't sure if it was just a fluke, and she seems awful young to have control, I agree. I do just love when she pulls the potty our herslef though and tries to sit down. It's hilarious!

Wow!! That's impressive!!

I think the next step would be to set aside a few days to really dedicate to potty training and do frequent visits to the potty (like hourly?). I would also reinforce signs/language for her to communicate when she has to go or needs a diaper change.

I think the challenge at this age though is that she may not have the muscle control to hold in a pee or poop if she has to go.

Anyway, I'm not an expert and haven't been through PT before, but I wanted to say that I'm impressed! I've sat my LO on the potty a handful of times with no pee or poop...he just thinks it's time to play pat-a-cake (because that's what I sing to get him to stay on for longer!).

We bought a potty about a month ago for DD just to get her used to it. We've gotten into the habit of sitting her on it when she follows us into the bathroom (which is like ALWAYS anymore!) She now comes in and pulls her potty out hersef and tries to sit down. In 4 weeks we've had 3 pees and 1 poop!! I'm pretty extatic but I'm not sure what the next step is? She is 17 months so I'm not in a hurry but she really seems to be catching on and I want to build on that momentum.
