Sounds exactly like what my R did suddenly. Still tired for her morning nap, took a solid nap then fought her afternoon nap tooth and nail. Then finally fell asleep close too close to bedtime and would then fight bedtime. Following advice of past threads and other bees, I get out and do something in the mornings and then give her lunch and put her down for one nap. Takes getting used to, but now we're in a better routine.

@Smurfette: I wrote in J's 11 month update that he was fighting his morning nap hard, and there were many days when he'd only take one nap so I thought he might be starting the 2-1 nap transition... But now he is back on 2 solid naps a day! So strange. It could be a phase.

@Smurfette: yep. slowly! i read on HB to push it back 15 minutes each day and that DID NOT work for us. I just tried to follow his cues, because when I pushed it back too fast, he got overtired and only slept 45 minutes. So, for a week or so it was a 1 hour nap, at 11 AM and he was then in bed by 6 pm for the night. Then, naturally, it moved back to a more rational time and lengthened. Now it's usually 1-3.

We're in the same situation of Baby Brother fighting his afternoon nap. I'm pretty sure I could push back his morning nap later and we could make the transition, but then it would fall on preschool pickup time, so we are just going to have to deal with two for a while longer. I've pretty much just been holding him during the second nap and then maybe getting an extra 20 minutes after I put him down. So no advice really, just commiseration.

We had a couple of weekends in a row of consistently fighting the first nap. Around the same time DD was moving to her new daycare room where they are on a 1-nap schedule anyways, so we decided to make the switch at home. It was surprisingly easy. The most difficult part was to keep her awake until a reasonable time to take the first nap so that she wouldn't get tired and cranky later. We basically just kept her entertained throughout the morning so she didn't get cranky, fed her an early lunch (11 or 11:30), and then off to bed around noon or 12:30 at the very latest.

Going to one nap was the hardest transition for us! Leading up to it Norah would go to bed normal time but wake up between 4:15 or 5am (on a good day). She would be tired and crabby until her rediculously early morning nap around 8 am. She would sleep until 10 and go down for a pm nap at 1. We started to push her (doing everything possible) to go back to sleep in the am. When she finally would, she would sleep until 6 or 7 and I would push her to stay awake until 11am nap time. She now has only one nap from 11-1. So for us it wasnt ever about fighting a nap but fighting a normal person waking time. It was a PROCESS getting there!

my kids both started fighting their 2nd naps at around 12-13 months old. after a week of fighting his 2nd nap I decided we were done. I pushed his am nap up an hour (to 3.5-4 hours after wake up) and he's been good!

Lo recently stopped taking his afternoon nap, even if I limited the morning nap, even if he was exhausted. So we moved to 1 nap. It has been really really difficult...he wakes up between 630 and 7, and is really tired by 10, but will only nap 1.5 hours, so he is SO TIRED by like 4pm and then melts down around dinner and bed. It's pretty awful.

We got through this "in between" phase (around 12 months) by limiting the morning nap to no more than an 45 mins - hour. That got him tired enough for the afternoon nap. When that stopped working (around 15 months) we went to one nap.

We just sort of naturally transitioned as she was such a hit or miss afternoon napper anyway. Now her one nap can start anywhere from 11 to 2 - it's really a crapshoot but it seems to work ;)

Miss A kept pushing her afternoon nap back until it was close to 5pm which would result in a 10pm bedtime! When we dropped to one nap we would go out in the morning so she was distracted and once we got home I would nurse her down for an 11am nap.

@Smurfette: I was actually just reading about this this morning, because K's been fighting her morning nap (but only for a couple days, so it's probably just a phase....I hope). The info I read said that a good sign is typically when they fight their morning nap, but take a consistently good nap in the afternoon. So I'm not sure that the opposite scenario is a good sign of being ready to make that transition? I really don't know though....

@Smurfette: I feel like I am kind of dealing with this with our morning nap too, but I feel like it's too soon?! She's been waking up early from her morning naps. But she still seems tired and whiney around nap time. I've been pushing it back a bit though and she might not be ready for that yet.

I don't have experience with my own child but with the LO I nannied for last...she would cry a lot, refuse or just take a really short nap (the one she had trouble with was her morning one) so one day I kept her up until directly after lunch. It took her a few days of nearly falling asleep at lunch but we had no more nap fighting after that!

R is 11 months but is fighting her 2nd nap hard. Yesterday she flat out wouldn't take one when we got home despite almost falling asleep in the car. Same thing today. She is crying and won't go to sleep but I know she is tired. I went in and tried to rock her and that didn't work.
