If he's still falling asleep easily for the nap after 10 mins of fighting it, I think he still needs it. We are going through weeks of good napping/night sleep and then weeks of no naps. I'm guessing by 3ish they will not need the nap anymore. No advice on the fighting bedtime/early wake up stuff though- I'm sure you've tried different stuff like making bedtime earlier if he's insanely cranky/tired? On days my LO doesn't nap, she passes out by 6:30/7.

For quiet time, we do the usual nap routine- dim the lights, tuck him in, and read a book. We use a dog/baby gate on his room since he and our dog are separated, so that keeps him from leaving his room. These days I'm usually fighting little bro for a nap, so I just give him the iPad on the couch and tuck him in with a blanket right there or put a Disney movie on the tv/dvd. He's always been pretty independent with play and books and rarely fights quiet time.

I honestly don't know. We're in that limbo where I am not pushing naps at all. Some days she doesn't nap. Some days she falls asleep and naps for 1.5 hours. Some days she falls asleep too late and I have to wake her up after 30 minutes. Regardless of nap or no nap she does not go to bed earlier than 9pm any more! That sucks.

Usually when I need to put baby sister down for her afternoon nap I turn on the tv for her and ask her to lay down on the coach to "rest". That's when she sometimes falls asleep and sometimes not.

Sh still naps at daycare which is why I think we won't be able to completely cut out naps yet.

@hilsy85: we're in nap limbo too but I'm hoping that A will be happy to do quiet time so I still get the break in the afternoon. Fortunately A will be off to kindy / preschool for three afternoons a week from August so I imagine she'll need to nap on the days she's home in the afternoon.

We go some days without a nap for my older one, although it is rare. We'll keep napping or at the very least have a period of quiet/rest time probably until 4...that's when they drop naps at preschool here.

Originally I said that if he would still nap at 18, then I wouldn't drop them- I loooooved the quiet break :silly:

But after he turned 3, he started skipping 3-4 days a week. He wasn't bad, he would just lay in bed and read books, so we had quiet time, which was fine.

The big problem got to be that he would stay up until 10 or 11 at night on days that he had napped. That got old quick!

He can nap now if he would like, and we still give him quiet time, usually books or iPad time so we get a break, but we are all happier for dropping those daytime naps since we can get him down around 8 and he sleeps until around 7. I never would have believed it, it's not the end of the world like I thought it would be!

A only naps about two days a week now. For us, she just started taking forever to fall asleep. We stroller nap most days but she wasn't nodding off even after our busiest mornings when she had run around for hours. The bonus was that bedtimes are much quicker on the days she doesn't nap. She does have a couple of naps each week though, when the tiredness builds up over a few days.

@hilsy85: Don't worry, L woke up at 5am or sometimes even 4.30 like clockwork for the longest time! I didn't think the early wake ups would ever end. A few months ago, she started sleeping later and later. It was unbelievable! I think once he starts preschool he will be super tired and will sleep in longer.

This morning I had to go in and wake her at 8.15 because we were running late for daycare. I could never have imagined a day when I would wake my kid!

@hilsy85: It actually depends on if he naps! This weekend, it was 8am for the day along with today because he skipped his nap on Friday and Sunday. On days he naps, it's usually 7am.

Since we switched him to the toddler bed, he's needed someone to stay with him and rub his back or belly to fall asleep. Some days, it's super quick. Other days (like the days my FIL is here...today) it's over an hour. He knows who he can manipulate and who he can't. My FIL will let him do whatever he wants. So I turn on the monitor to see him out of his bed, walking around with my FIL sitting in the rocker. That doesn't help me! I then go in and take over, and he's asleep in 15 minutes.

The only other thing that's helped us was to push nap to about 1:30. So he will sleep an hour and a half until about 3, or if he's late falling asleep and he doesn't go down until 2, he'll sleep until 3:30/4pm.

I also have to say that he's hit or miss with waking up too. If we have to wake him up...he is cranky for at least an hour afterwards. If he wakes up on his own, it's a far better evening experience!

C goes through phases where she'll nap every day for 2 weeks and then have a week where she'll skip the nap most days. We're currently in the latter. The worst part is that less napping usually translates to earlier awake times in the morning, so I'm really not ready to throw in the towel on the naps. Especially with the babies coming, I'm going to keep pushing for quiet time in her room. If she sleeps, great. If not, there's not much I can do. But if I can at least make the quiet time part of her routine, it'l'l be a success. We SAHM's need the hour or 90 minutes of peace and quiet to rev back up for the afternoon/evening.

I don't know, I'm at a loss. I thought we were dropping nap 3 or 4 months ago, and night sleep didn't improve. Then I gave in and went back to nap, and it improved nap sleep again. So we're still hanging on for now. I only let him nap an you, though.

Going down for nap was never an issue, but bedtime was taking 1-2 hours to fall asleep (happy and calm, but that made me feel worse...) Seems to have been a phase.

We did it by default. When he switched day cares, his new class was no longer napping (at 3.5yo). That said, he could still do with a nap and goes down easily on the weekends. Maybe go a few days with no naps and see how he reacts before deciding to be completely done with them? He might still need one every now and then.

LO's (2.5) sleep has just been a mess since we paci weaned and potty trained about a month ago. He is falling asleep around 9, waking up between 5:45 and 6:15, and naps are a HUGE battle--screaming, crying, etc. He will usually only nap about 1.5 hours and wakes up super cranky most of the time. I am wondering if dropping his nap will help him sleep longer overnight, and get more sleep overall...but he DOES still fall asleep really easily for his nap, once he is calm and in his crib.

How did you know it was time?
