One piece of advice that annoyed me when I got it, but really fit is that as soon as you are comfortable, things will change. It's mostly true in the first year. I'd always do bedtime when fussy, but it might be a good time to try a dream feed if Lo starts waking up more.

We all went out to a really early dinner and upon arriving home I put him down for a late nap at 5:30. He didn't wake until 11, ate and went back to sleep. He only ate again once that night. I think this was at 5 weeks or so. Since he did it on his own, I started the next night with a really early bedtime.

In fact, it was slightly problematic, since I had just finished pumping 15 minutes before he woke up. I was engorged and wasn't sure when he was going to wake up again. His feeds were never at a consistent time, merely twice a night. Usually they were between 11-1 and again 3-5.

Currently, his bedtime is between 5:45 and 7:30 depending upon his naps for the day, particularly his last nap. He's 4 months.

@HappyBaker: I would just give it a try, maybe for a few nights, and see what happens! The kid-free time at night is *such* a game changer.

@MrsF: ha I know that's why I'm hesitant to change anything! That sounds just like us though, he's just so cranky and then ends up taking a mini nap around that time so I feel like he could just be in bed! And the alone time is what I'm after, I can't wait to get back to that!

J is 10 weeks and at about 8 weeks I realized that we were just torturing each other for the last 2 hours that we were all awake. Either he would fall asleep or scream the whole time because he was overtired. We already put M down at 7:30 so I just started feeding J right after that and putting him down at 8. I figured that he might start waking more but he's still doing great at night. Honestly I would be willing to deal with an extra night waking for those couple of kid-free hours in the evening. It's so wonderful to have some time alone with DH again at night too

Also - Your LO is sleeping 9:30-3 at 5 weeks?? That's awesome!

When my DD shows signs of being tired (grumpiness, rubbing eyes, ect) I put her to bed. That has slowly been earlier and earlier since she was born. I'd follow your LO's cues.

Because she'd get nasty and I'd get frustrated and just put her down and then she'd be asleep! Haha! Eventually we ended at 6:45 bedtimes and it was the sweet spot

When did you start putting baby to bed earlier and how did you know it was time?

DS is 5 weeks old and has been a champ so far, sleeping 9:30-3, but lately he is super fussy around 7:30/8 and I'm wondering if we should just put him to bed then. But I feel like then he'd wake twice overnight instead of just once, and I don't want to deal with that!
