@MungBean: haha oh, my to your pharmacist. Sounds like it was difficult to shake :(

@sorrycharlie: I don't have any cracks and haven't been nursing a whole lot lately (mostly just exclusively pumping) so I'm thinking I don't have it... the rash seems to be fading and not spreading so maybe it was just a reaction to something. I'm still scared though... and now I'm worried I have shingles again (I got shingles while nursing the last time around and didn't realize it until weeks later, and by then it was really late to treat it and I had nerve pain for months!!!)

Itchy nipples/boobs, bright pink/shiny nipples, sharp shooting pains when nursing (feels like little needles or knives), white patches on L's tongue and roof of her mouth :(

We had thrush for about 6 weeks straight. We just kept passing it back and forth :( We finally eradicated it by washing all clothes and towels (basically anything that came in touch with my milk, boobs, or her mouth) in hot water daily; using Nystatin after every feeding (both in her mouth and on my nipples); sterilizing toys, pacifiers, bottles, pump parts, etc after every single use; and using Bacitracin on my nipples to heal the cracks. Oh, I also had to use vaginal yeast infection cream on my nipples... that was lovely. Kicker was when the pharmacist instructed me very loudly in a crowded room to apply the yeast cream directly on my nipples after every single feeding. Thank you, sir.

I was worried I was beginning to get it. My LC said that having damage on your nipples (I had/have cracks and bleeding) can make you more susceptible to it, as a cut on your hand would be more likely to get infected. She said in the baby's mouth, there would be white spots on the tongue, roof of the mouth, inside the lips and pockets of the cheeks. She said they won't easily wipe off, and also that if they are there, it means the infection is likely close to a week old by that point.

She said in Mom, there's sharp stabbing pains and sometimes pink/raw-ish nipples.

There's a good article on KellyMom too about how to spot it, but I still couldn't figure out if I have it. The pain isn't as bad today so I'm thinking we don't..yet.

See, these responses scare me. I get the knife-like pain all the time. And for the first time the underside of my right boob (the side that has pain often, and the side I got mastitis on) itches like crazy and I have a raised rash. Gonna find some genetian violet pills...

I never saw white patches on LO but we did have it. It was telltale when my breasts were itching SO badly they hurt during and after feedings. I scratched them so much I had cuts and sores around my boobs.

I also had a slightly raised rash that I thought was just from scratching but it was the rash.

I treated mine with gentian violet as well. I dabbed a little into DS's mouth with a qtip and swabbed my breasts with it too. He had purple mouth for over a week.

Pumping/nursing started becoming painful. I started getting random sharp pains. The kicker was sharp pains I started having in my breasts one night. I pumped to see if it would ease the pain however it got progressively worse. It literally felt like I was being stabbed over and over again. I remember laying there crying and thinking that I would rather go through labor again! DH stayed home from work the next day, I went to the dr who brushed it off. I ended up picking up gentian violet and grapefruit seed extract pills and the pain subsided within a day or so.

I started having random sharp pains in my breasts while NOT feeding - like while walking down the street. It felt like a knife or needle stabbing me. Not fun.

My LO showed symptoms first. She had little white patches on her lips. I asked my doctor some ways to tell. I had cracked nipples from time to time and sometimes when I would let down it felt like needles. We both seem to be better but I'm not convinced it's completely gone yet.

I'm constantly worried about getting Mastitis again, and since I also never got Thrush with my first baby, I'm now worried about that as well. Sometimes nursing or pumping will be extremely painful and I'm always worried that I am getting thrush. What was the warning flag for you? I want to be able to relax UNTIL I see some specific sign...
