This sleep/wt chart really helped me! https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GHo4keUb2TVJUlSL1kD6HQcEgaNFBmzoQoOzcpcyas/edit?hl=en&authkey=CPXE1bsO&pli=1#

It just gave me a frame of reference for roughly how long their awake times should be at a certain age. I combined it with looking for cues, to give me a sense of my LO's awake times. According to this chart, around 4-5 months, many babies can stay awake for about 1.75-2 hours between naps.

Sounds just like what @ellewoods84: has been doing~

Sometimes babies just have weird, off days. I would see if it becomes a pattern before changing nap time. I totally relate the the rigid nap schedule, even now at 15 months, we are slaves to their nap!

It could be related to the 4 month regression. If he's cranky and yawning, I would probably still keep trying to put him down at that time and stick with the short naps...at least for a few more days. If that doesn't help then try keeping him up longer. I wish I could remember exactly what LO's awake time was at that age...I know it was 1.5hrs at 3 months and I think it increased by roughly 15 mins each month until 6 months when we had a big jump in awake time.

EDIT--I just looked back at my posts on here...at 4.5 months she was awake for 2hrs between naps.

@twodoghouse: I know! I told my husband that now when I go to baby showers I am going to buy books about sleep and tell them to read it NOW, because I was/still am clueless about baby sleep and I definitely don't have the time to research it now! I think it is a developmental thing. It SUCKS, but I just keep saying this is just a phase.....this too shall pass. Sigh. Anyways, yes, I just make her stay up longer. Also, like looch said, it was taking longer and longer to put her down for naps and she wasn't even acting sleepy so she was staying up for 1 hour 45 minutes anyways, even 2 hours sometimes if she was fighting it hard. Well, she still does that sometimes. But, yes, I read that anywhere under 2 hours of awake time for a baby of 4-6 months should be a-okay and should not lead to over tiredness. Now, it works for me to keep her up until 1 hour and 40-45 minutes, but I obviously am not the sleep expert (lol, judging from my 10000 threads I have started on sleep). But, it might just work for Blake too! Worth a shot!

@ellewoods84: So you just sort of....make her stay up longer? Does that work? I wish I'd spent less time reading birth stories and more time reading about baby sleep when I was pregnant! I love/hate that all us moms with 4-5 month olds are losing it over sleep lately. Must be this age. At least we're not alone!

@looch: Well it's definitely taking longer! I'll try extending it the rest of the day and see if that starts working for him. Thanks!

For us, the big clue was that it took longer to go down for naps.

@twodoghouse: so cute! So I just kind of figured that now that O baby is 4.5 months old, I would start to extend her awake time. She now is awake 1 hr 40 min-1 hr 45 min between naps. I just started doing it one day like maybe around the time she turned 4 months? I start the nap routine around the 1 hr 30 min mark and she us usually asleep within 10-15 min. She does start to get kinda fussy, but I will just redirect her to another activity. When she turns 5 months, I plan on increasing it to 1 hr 50 minutes. I feel like if I don't increase these awake times, we will be stuck on 4 naps a day forever and well....no. Lol.

Oh, and because I believe all posts should have at least one baby picture, here's Blake thanking you for the help.

I realize this might be a stupid question and the answer might be "um, they just stay awake longer dummy!" But we stick rigidly to the nap schedule around here and I'm freaked out about messing with things unnecessarily!

All morning and early afternoon, my 4 month old twins usually go about 1 hr 15 min before they start to get a little cranky. We start nap routine then and they're usually (both!) out at the 1 hr 30 min mark. Sometimes the baby who is doing drowsy but awake takes a bit longer but not much.

However, yesterday Blake resisted going down for his naps, only napped for 30 minutes for his two morning naps, then skipped his afternoon nap entirely. He finally passed out on grandma's shoulder around 3:30. I'm wondering if he is resisting naps because he could use a longer awake time and I'm trying to still make 1.5 hrs a thing. He is still getting cranky and yawning at the 1 hr 15 min mark. Should we just push through and see if he can stay awake a little longer and hope he'll go down easily like he used to? Or will that be a disaster? Someone help me - I'm scared to mess up our great nap schedule!
