I didn't really know and kept waiting it out until the pain was so bad I felt like I was being ripped in two! Got to hospital and I was 7 cm....kind of undeniable!

In the very beginning I wasn't sure.. I have had false labor two times before that and so I didn't want to get my hopes up. But by the time the contractions were really regular it was obvious. I was in extreme pain and there was no denying that.

My water broke before any real contractions started -that part was pretty obvious but just a few minutes before it broke I was making plans to have breakfast with my parents the next day. I had no clue! After it broke, contractions started to gradually intensify.

Took me a while to realize honestly - i went out to lunch and was apparently having mild contractions then, i thought i just wasn't feeling well. came home, took a nap and a more painful contraction woke me up, painful enough for me to download a contraction counter app lol then they started coming regularly after that 5 min apart and i knew, was admitted midnight that night had LO that day!

I lost my mucus plug two days after my due date at 2pm. By 4pm I knew I was in labor but it wasn't painful. Labor was painful by 10pm and excruciating by 4am. So I had about 6 hours from 4-10pm to pack a bag or get to where I needed to be.

I was worried too but unless you progress super quickly, you should have plenty of time to realize contractions are painful, get home somehow, and get yourself to the hospital! With my first, I was having very uncomfortable contractions for hours before we headed to the doctor's, and I was only 2.5 cm dilated at that point.

DS-water broke, contractions started immediately.

Dd-wasn't sure. Felt a little sick, then started shaking and having contractions so bad I was on the floor couldn't move. Started bleeding and I knew I was in labor.

DD1 - My water broke during what I thought was a small Braxton Hicks contraction

DD2 - I was in denial at first, but when I started timing contractions I realized it might be the real thing (they were often and regular)...this labor went quickly and I cut it pretty close by waiting to go to the hospital til I was "sure" it was time (ie it started to hurt).

It was obvious for me. I was in bed trying to fall asleep and the first contraction had me wide awake. The second one got me out of bed because they were so much worse for me when I was lying down or sitting.
I read about other women's experiences with early labor and a lot of them described early contractions as more like stronger period cramps. Not the case for me. They started strong.

I woke up at 5am having my first contraction. It was pretty obvious that was what it was.

@Foodnerd81: I didn't tell DH I was in labour for about 7hrs because I didn't want to disturb him working if it was a false alarm!

I woke up having contractions that were stronger than any I'd had before, but I wasn't totally sure. It was a Sunday and I was already on maternity leave, so I wasn't going anywhere anyway. They kept coming somewhat regularly (like every 10-15 minutes) for long enough that I was pretty sure it was the real deal, but DH and I actually debated whether he should go play GOLF or not, an hour and a half away (he still has not lived that down nor will he ever).

But I didn't actually tell my family I was in labor for more than 12 hours because I wanted to be really really sure it wasn't a false alarm. :)

This might sound silly, but is it obvious? One of my fears is going into labor while at work and I'm wondering if you can tell right away that you're in labor or if it sort of creeps up on you. :-)
