My daughter was social and potty trained at two so we enrolled her and she thrived. They handled the nap (from day one-so shocked) and the hand washing. She wasn't a huge advocate for herself yet but she learned that one quickly! And yes she was still a baby--but she adjusted well and we are happy we did. Good thing I have long breaks from work and would minimize time away by rushing everyday to pick her up.

Truthfully I didnt think my son was ready at all and maybe thats why it was great he went. I still thought he was too immature and not well behaved enough to do well in a classroom setting. He wasnt even close to being potty trained as well which I thought was a must. I contacted the school I liked the best on a whim in early Sept just to say I have a 3 yer old boy, he isnt potty trained, and Im not sure he is ready for school with the way he acts and they said to come to orientation. Oh my gosh. While all the other kids sat with their parents and did the craft set out my son ran around the table scribbling on everyone elses work as I tried to chase him will holding my 3 month old daughter. Then he had a snatching fight on the rug during play time and stood right next to the teacher as she was doing a story trying to turn the pages himself to see the next picture. At the end of orientation I was pretty sure they were going to kick us out, instead they said to sign him up this was exactly why he needed to be in school already. I was really hesitant, I thought he would be expelled within a week but my husband and MIl and mom all said do it they can handle it. I am so glad I took a chance, school was exactly what he needed. It took some time but he loved it and was so excited to go and he loved his teacher and she performed nothing short of a miracle on him. He still needs some work but the difference between 3-4 was amazing and I think school had a lot to do with it. Knowing this all my kids are going at 3 because its so amazing how much they gain from it.

As a preschool teacher who has kids 2 1/2 to 4 in my room, I'd say readiness is all social and emotional at that age. I'd say to ask yourself:
-Is she reasonably comfortable around new people?
-Can she play on her own (going from toy to toy) for a length of time (15-20 min)?
-Does she "advocate" for herself (ask for help, answer questions, etc)?
-Will she follow simple directions (to clean up, come to a new room, etc)?

Children who are able to do those things have had the smoothest transitions. Some "bonus" skills for me have been kids who know how to use the toilet by themselves, wash their hands, and take a nap

She's potty trained! Ha. That's not a major reason, but it does help. She likes being around other children and is very inquisitive. Her current nanny share situation is great and nurturing but she definitely needs more of a challenge and structured activity.

We plan on sending LO to preschool this fall. We are going to a few open houses in March and we are pretty excited. I've been thinking though, do kids need to be "ready" for preschool? She will start a few days after her 3rd birthday which means she has a good 7 months before she starts, but some days I feel like she is still a baby and there's no way she can go to school. I know she has some time but how will I know if she is truly ready to start preschool? How did you decide if your LO was ready to start school or not?
