Attention span and desire. We have a longer book, kind of like a comic book, that takes about an hour to read from start to finish and my son was really into it last year when he was 4. After reading that one, I suggested Harry Potter. We read the first one reading a chapter or two a day over about 2 weeks. It was well beyond his level but he did follow the plot line and was able to keep all the characters mostly straight. He would ask me random questions about the story too, so he was definitely paying attention. But I'm pretty sure a lot of the finer details were lost on him. We tried reading book 2 but stopped. I also tried Matilda with him, but he wasn't as interested and I think he was scared by Mrs. Trunchbull, so we stopped. I don't push him so when I see that he's not interested or doesn't like it, I stop. There will be plenty of time for him to discover these books on his own too!

Did your LO show signs of being interested in listening to chapter books? How old were they? And do you think they grasped what was happening in the story?
