@redsmarties: my first book I took out from my third grade classroom was a cookbook! I made cookies...vanilla extract? Is that like vanilla ice cream?

I watched a lot of food network (back when it was good and not filled with the crap you have now) and read a ton of cook books and websites. I was pretty obsessed. I also took cooking classes here and there.

I learned at first by watching my mom!

Then later, lots of reading cookbooks and experimenting when I lived on my own. I had to pretty much re-learn how to cook when I got sick with my stomach issues after college, and since then, I've really learned a lot.

@redsmarties: love that :)

Out of necessity. I started getting dinner started for my mom when I was probably 10. Then probably by the time I was 12 I was completely in charged of dinner.
After DH and I started dating cooking together and experimenting became our thing.

watching my parents/grandparents cook, helping them as I got older. I also lived alone far from family and friends for a period of time and used cooking as a way to feel closer to those that I was so far from. After that I started collecting cookbooks and trying new recipes.

Mostly watching my mom. I'm still not a very good cook. I would say I have maybe 4 "go to" dishes that are tasty and I can cook with ease and comfort. I think one day when the kids are in school I would love to take a cooking course during the day and really learn about building sauces, flavors, and knife skills!

Alton Brown. I think I've watched every episode of "Good Eats" and have cooked through many of his cookbooks.
I remember cooking with my mom, but she didn't really like to do it. I also remember making one specific dish with my grandmother regularly, but she didn't really "teach" me how to cook.

It was a process. I watched/helped mom growing up, then had to figure it out when I moved out. But being a SAHM really upped my skills. I always could follow a recipe but now can make pretty much anything and I like trying out new dishes.

I just called her over the weekend to ask how she makes pastina & it was the longest and most frustrating conversation. She was very worried about the size of my sauce pan.
