My parents never taught me. I decided to become a vegetarian when I was 24 and that propelled me into the world of recipes and learning basically on my own. :)

I taught myself with trial and error once I moved in with DH. My mom taught me a couple of basics, but in high school I was rarely home in the evenings at dinner time because I was either at work, soccer practice, or a game. I'm not a big recipe person. I started with lots of boxed items and worked my way up to cooking from scratch.

I taught myself when I moved out with DH into our first place. This is not to say my mom (my poor, poor mom) or my home economics teachers didn't try to teach me- I just couldn't be bothered with it for whatever reason until I NEEDED to cook. Now I spend weekends making curries and forming gnocchi for soups (I'm currently drying some jerky in the dehydrator! haha)- I love to cook, I love to eat...Jillian Michaels would likely not approve ;)

My mom taught me the basics but I used a lot of online recipes when I was in college and first married to get better at it.

@teawithpaloma: I learned a lot from The Pioneer Woman too! Her tutorials are great for beginners.

I learned from my roommate in college, as my mother rarely cooked, and when she did it was hamburger helper, or something she could just defrost in the microwave.

I basically hated food and ate about 4 things until my roommate taught me to enjoy food, eat it slowly, and cook from taste using basic ingredients -- garlic, onion, herbs, etc. Living in Paris for a year deepened my appreciation for food as a pleasurable experience. It made me want to cook more!

Eventually, I took a one-week boot camp at the Culinary Institute of America. That gave me the confidence to make several basic sauces, and to identify good cooking methods for a wide range of proteins and vegetables, so that if I found a great cut of meat at the market, I would know to braise it, fry it, whatever without needing a recipe.

IMO, cooking with recipes is a pain and takes the joy out of it. I'm amazed by the number of people who follow a recipe and never taste the dish at any point before it goes to table to make sure it's delicious. It's like driving with your eyes closed. I want to teach my daughter how to cook using her own senses, judgement and appreciation for what's fresh and good in season.

My parents occasionally would try to teach me certain recipes, but didn't really make it their missions to teach me how to cook (and this is coming from Spanish parents.) I actually didn't become interested in cooking until I got married (almost 6 years ago.) Once I got married and was looking for a job, I began to love and appreciate cooking.

I learned watching my mom. I'm definitely more of a cook than a baker (so is she)... not that i have any time to cook right now, but know i'll get back to it eventually.

By following a recipe. My mom can't cook, but my dad is an amazing chef. He cooks by taste, and I can't do that at all. MIL is the same way, and she's also a great cook. I try and try and try, but I just can't ever identify the missing ingredient/taste! DH can't either. Sucks I can't replicate their recipes to a T since something is always missing.

DH actually taught me to cook! I knew nothing basically. He is a fantastic cook, but now I am better than he is  Growing up, my mom never cooked. We ate really sort of yucky processed foods like "lipton noodles" "hungry jack powdered plain potatoes" "canned veg" stuff like that. Ugh!

My mum hated to cook, or thought she did, so I never learned a thing. Now I cook at least once a day (obviously) and want to find ways to love it. It is much easier when someone is watching LO...

My mom learned to cook from my grandmother, and I learned from my mom. What's interesting is that when I go and visit my aunts, we cook the same stuff, and I don't even need to ask what to do to "fit" into the flow.

Having said that, I do read recipe books to diversify.

When I was young it was my chore to make the salad every night. I hated it (and never make salad now) but I guess I learned to cook by watching my mom cook while I made the salad. I don't remember learning but when I got to college I already knew.

90% was learnt from my mum - both watching and helping, starting at about tween-age. I'm Greek, and culturally there is a huge emphasis on knowing to cook, so I learnt by endless repetition. I'm still learning, as we have dinner together every week and I cook with her to get the job done quicker. Its the fine art of over-catering when you're just having a "small dinner"!

My parents showed me a couple of things when I lived at home, like how to crumb chicken and make a bolognese. The rest of it I worked out by looking up recipes when I moved out of home. I definitely had a few mistakes along the way but now I have some regular recipes and I can improvise to a certain degree. I'm an imprecise cook and don't always measure!

I guess my mom went against the grain! She taught me how/I followed her around and then in hs I had to have (Korean) dinner on the table for them before I could go out! (They worked 7-7). I loved it and learned a lot of cooking from daring dh too!

My mom never taught me how to cook growing up because it's Korean culture for moms to do everything. I learned how to cook in college by calling my mom and asking her how to cook things. I definitely wouldn't say I'm a good cook now, nor do I enjoy cooking... though I definitely enjoy eating!

I will definitely teach Charlie and Olive how to cook before they go off and live on their own.
