Recipes. I can't cook by "tasting". Unfortunately, all of my dad's delicious cooking is done by taste.... (>_<)

I had no interest in helping my mom or learning growing up, I learned when I got my first 1 bedroom apartment and had to feed myself and was sick of pre-packaged food. I got recipe books & started different recipes and realized I enjoyed putting stuff together!

My mom is great cook but she didn't really like us working her kitchen. My grandma let me play around in her kitchen but she didn't teach me much, just let me experiment. In the end I think I taught myself through trial and error.

I was my mom's sous chef. I actually was cooking dinners by the time I was 8.

I stopped cooking in my early 20s/single days because it was a pain to cook for just me. I got over that and tried new things and now I'm a pretty decent cook.

I learned how to cook korean food in Middle school from my mom. my parents owned their own business and I'd try to make dinner for them before they got home. In HS, I basicallyw asn't allowed to leave the house to hang out with friends until dinner was on the table! :P dwenjangook was my GOTO dinner soup! LOL

I learned how to cook "american" and other non-korean dishes starting in college and mostly while dating DH! :D OOH and I took a "Home Ec" class in ms!

I taught myself how to bake when i was 8, and a lot of it was trial and error.

My grandmother cooked all of our meals, so i learned from her. But when i was in university, my mom hired someone to give me private Korean cooking lessons. I also took some skills courses at the local college.

For the most part, i've improved my technique through books and videos, and of course, trial and error.

I learned the basics by watching the food network back in the day! I found the most helpful shows to be everyday italian and rachel ray, even though i'm not a fan of her recipes!

My mother is a fantastic cook, I think she has made 3 meals a day for over 40 years. She comes from a family of good cooks.

She has a repertoire of things that she knows how to do very well and I was always around in the kitchen, so I learned what to do. She's a terrible cooking teacher, by the way, so I just learned by watching, not by any actual instruction on her part.

I also learned by watching cooking shows and reading up on techniques and practicing.

My grandma was a great cook, I would always watch her and join her in the kitchen. I really started cooking in college though, senior year when I lived in a house with 4 girlfriends.

My mom taught me to make all our usual family dinners. She was a work outside the home mom, so once my sister and I knew how to do it, we could prep stuff when we got home from school or before school in the morning. Once I knew the basics it was relatively easy to expand on that by reading recipes, or mimicking food I ate in restaurants for flavours that complement each other well.

I learned through trial and error. I didn't cook until
I lived with my husband. I started out with packaged everything and gradually learned how to prepare things fresh.

Not a great cook by any means, but I started out using cookbooks that focused on technique and explaining reasons for doing things as well as simple recipes that I could memorize by doing over and over again.

Three things were really shaping influences - both my mom and my grandmother are excellent cooks, I really enjoyed spending time with both of them (which meant I spent a lot of time in the kitchen), and my parents took me out to eat at fancy restaurants from the time I was very young. Being around great food and ingredients got me interested in food from an early age, and I just experimented from there.

I am generally pretty creative and have a good sense of what types of things go together, so I cook "from scratch" a lot. I also LOVE Pinerest - I Pin recipes all the time and then tweak them a bit. Other great sources for me are old, venerable cookbooks (like Julia Child, the Joy of Cooking, Chez Panisse cookbooks) and Cook's Illustrated Magazine.

Lot's of trial and error! :)

I cooked a little growing up, but my parents didn't teach me anything special. I did cook as play a lot in my adolescence though. We were allowed to experiment in the kitchen, which was so much fun!

Haha my mum made me! I was adamant that I was moving out of home at the end of high school (aged 17) so she said she'd support it if I managed all my own chores and cooked for the family twice a week! Clever lady... Got two years worth of meals out of me.

Both my parents are good cooks, but didn't teach us so I taught myself through trial and error. No real tips, though. I just kept trying and following recipes and eventually something just clicked and it became very instinctual. I think learning what different herbs and spices complement each other (and what dishes they work best in) is a great place to start.

Sounds like there are a lot of great cooks here!

How did you learn to cook? Did your parents/grandparents teach you... you learn from a book... through trial and error... or take a course? Or something else entirely??

I'd like to get better at cooking, and would love some pointers on where to get started!
