When my shoulder started hurting I turned to a 45 degree angle and propped the Snoogle and other pillows around me to keep me at that angle.

@spaniellove: When I sleep on my stomach my arms are up over my head and under the pillow, however when I try to put my arm up under the pillow when I'm laying on my side it is EXTREMELY uncomfortable for my shoulder. The only thing remotely comfortable is to hug the body pillow. But even doing that, I wake up 3ish hours later with a throbbing achy shoulder.

It's just so weird, I've never had shoulder issues in my whole life so its such a new/weird issue for me to be having!

Do you tuck an arm under the pillow and kind of extend it out? I've always been a side sleeper and if I don't reach my bottom arm out under the pillow I'll wake up in a lot of pain. Strangely enough, sleeping with the Snoogle (I have the one that extends around both sides) has been the first time in my life I've consistently woken up on my back, so this pillow thing might be counterproductive.

Lots of pillows. One behind my back, one between my legs and one for me to hug. Not gonna lie, I'm not a side sleeper either and I had the worst time sleeping late in pregnancy.... Not looking forward to that phase.

Ugh. I hated it. A pillow between my legs and behind my back really helped. Altho I would wake up motn on my back. :(

I don't have any real advice for you, but it'll probably eventually become more uncomfortable to stomach sleep than to side sleep, so your body will just adjust. I am normally a back sleeper, but it started getting too uncomfortable sometime in the second tri. I now sleep with a pillow on either side of me so that I can freely roll over without wrangling a pillow.

I was totally a stomach sleeper too and slept on my stomach until probably 22ish weeks. I stopped because when I would lay on it, she'd start kicking the heck out of me as if to say, "give me some room Mom!" Lol.

I haven't needed a pillow. I found it to be too cumbersome to be worth it, but we have a memory foam mattress topper which I think is the reason why I've not needed one. I also started out kind of half sleeping on my stomach and half on my side, then slowly adjusted as I got bigger. I'm 34 weeks now.

I also kind of bunch up my down pillow under my neck with my arm under my pillow too. I think it helps keep my neck supported.

@Mae: Oh and I know what you mean about little tiny person in there! It's amazing. I first felt movement at around 16-17 weeks while lying on the beach. I was lying on my belly on firm sand and it was like baby was pushing out saying roll over mama, I need some room in here! Now they're much bigger I figure they'll let me know if they feel squished ;)

@Mae: Yup. They basically said there's plenty of cushioning in there and so long as I don't feel any physical discomfort then it's more beneficial to baby to get sleep. (FWIW I'm with a CNM group, not an OB).

To clarify, there's no pressure on the bump itself - the snoogle supports my weight all around it - belly goes in the doughnut "hole". Baby's growing right on schedule with everything where it's supposed to be.

@Mae: I was told stomach sleeping in no problem as long as you are comfortable. It's not a problem for the baby until long after it'd be uncomfortable to you.

I used a wannabe-Boppy pillow to kind of cradle my stomach and put another pillow between my knees. But I slept on my stomach until 27 weeks.

@PEAPIE: I have been sort of squishing my pillow up under my neck/chin because it gives my head/neck more support that way. I feel like I'm just not built for side sleeping. Boo. lol

@Mae: I am having issues getting comfy on my side too. I guess the answer is just lots of pillows. And for some reason, shoving a small blanket under my chin/armpit area takes some of the weight of my head and doesn't make my shoulder hurt as much.

I was a stomach sleeper also, but when my belly got bigger, I started training myself to sleep on my side, but somehow ended up sleeping on my back! Another "no-no" sleep position, but that was the only way I could actually sleep. The OB said it was okay, and that if the baby was doing damage, my body would naturally wake me up. I had a pregnancy pillow that was connected with a regular pillow so that I had a body pillow on each side of me so I didn't have to bring the pillow to the other side if I switched sides while sleeping.

@OldEnglandMama: have you asked your doc about stomach sleeping? I still don't have too much of a bump and it isn't uncomfortable for me to sleep on my stomach. Its just after my anatomy scan at 18 weeks when i saw she was such a real tiny person in there i got all freaked out about squishing her haha.

I have a snoogle, make a doughnut shape, and put my belly in the hole. 30 weeks and I'm still a stomach sleeper!

I tried sleeping on my side but had the same achey problem, and/or would find I rolled anyway. DH is an osteopathic medical student and was concerned I was doing myself damage so he bought me the snoogle as a surprise. Best gift ever!

So, I've been a stomach sleeper my whole life. Never been able to sleep any other way. Throughout my pregnancy so far I've still be sleeping on my stomach but at this point (20 weeks) I'm starting to get concerned about squishing the baby and I know I really need to convert to being a side sleeper.

I have a nice body pillow and that definitely helps. I've been trying to use it off on and on and for the last week or so I've been able to fall asleep every night sleeping on my side hugging the pillow. The issue is staying asleep. I wake up in the middle of the night EVERY NIGHT with my shoulder just aching. I think it just isn't used to the pressure of me laying on it for so long? It hurts so bad I can't get back to sleep.

I've been trying to roll to my other side (although I think you're really supposed to sleep on your left side?) but that is such a hassle bc getting the body pillow moved to my other side under all the covers is a battle and it sort of wakes me up. Then I wake up a few hours later with my right shoulder aching. I hate it.

How do you side sleepers do it? Do other people just not have this issue? Ugh. It sucks to have such a superficial issue be impeding my sleep when I'm still able to sleep otherwise and I feel like I should be enjoying my sleep now while I still can!
