Wow, I can't seem to remember how I night weaned with Nicholas. I think I might have just went cold turkey and was fine? Sorry, I'm no help! But I am definitely interested in how everyone did it though. I should have kept a better journal on how I did things with my first.

My husband started going in for the wake ups instead of me. She doesn't get in a fury over not getting milk when he goes in but if I were to go in and not give her milk she gets enraged. She still wakes up at night but not as often and most of the time puts herself back to sleep. We've been traveling a lot though and whenever we travel I end up night nursing so we keep having to start back at square one.

@Mrs. Bee: Maybe it will happen on its own soon? LO had a stretch around that age where he started STTN, but then we moved and it was back to once a night until 12 months :(

@ohapostrophe: that sounds positively brilliant! DS is 6.5 month and has STTN 3-4 times in the last 3 weeks - amazing! We are still working on establishing solids so I feel bad taking away his night feeding (which changes every night, sometimes it's 10pm, 1am or 4am!). Perhaps by 9 months we'll be ready (which might be perfect timing since my dr said there will be another sleep regression). I will be keeping that idea in my head for future use.
I love the line, "he saw it was my husband and not me coming to get him, and rolled over like, "oh nevermind then"" lol!! so cute!!

I've dropped one night feed by accident/out of exhaustion and she is just 6 months. She woke up the first time between 10-11, and one night I was just so exhausted I took to long to get to her, and she'd fallen back asleep. I'm not a big CIO fan, but it kind of accidentally happened. She was whining though, not crying so I don't feel so bad. Now she only wakes once to eat some time between 3-5am and stays in bed until 9am

@Mrs. Bee: that is tougher! Bedtime is definitely going to be the trickier time for weaning...that's the only time he really puts up a fight if his dad puts him to bed. I've been a huge fan of the super slow wean though, it's been easier on all of us and less sad for me to just take our time with it. We will see how it goes over the next couple of months!

@Sammyfab: yah i could cio but have put it off. she was amazingly easy to nap train, and when we got back from our trip, she went right back to sleeping without retraining!

but i don't really nurse her during the week except in the morning, so i've kept the middle of the night feedings because i miss her! i think my supply has also kept up because of the middle of the night nursing.. otherwise it'll probably take a big hit at this point.

she's definitely waking up out of habit/for comfort. the day before she slept til 5am, and she's slept through the night a couple of times. I just haven't had the heart to cio at night.

@ohapostrophe: ideally that's what would happen with us. but it's tougher when you have two kids! i'm responsible for olive, and mr. bee is responsible for charlie. and charlie's sleep has been totally off since we got back from our trip. when i go out and mr bee gets olive at night, she stays awake... even if it's hours.... until i come home! she's just not used to mr bee putting her down. i've been so tired since we got back from our trip though, night weaning is sounding very attractive.

for some reason she is an excellent napper and i think she prefers to go into her crib awake. but at night she's much more insistent about nursing.... probably a habit!

Once Finn had slept through the night (10-11 hours) a number of times, night wakeups became my husband's duty. That was all kinds of awesome, I'm not going to lie ;) I'd go in and nurse if it was definitely needed, but luckily it only took a couple of weeks of him realizing he wasn't getting milk in the middle of the night to stop waking up at all. A couple of times he saw it was my husband and not me coming to get him, and rolled over like, "oh nevermind then" :)

i need to keep up with this thread. what's the EARLIEST to try and night wean? my kids wake up twice a night - around 10-11 and 4-5. i'd love to night wean but feel maybe they need to eat? they are 5 months.

My LO is 19 months and we co-sleep and he nurses several times in the night. We are dealing with this issue right now because I'm ready for the waking up to stop!

From what I've read it's difficult to night wean if you co-sleep (which we want to do) and also the night nursings are usually the last to go. I'm very interested to see what others have to say.

She finally started STTN here and there so we knew should could make it all night. Now we kinda do CIO. If she does cry in the middle of hte night we will go in there but not pick her up. After a few nights she got used to it and doesn't expect milk anymore. Now she still won't fall asleep on her own but thats another issue.

Also, now that I stopped pumping at work, I didn't have enough milk to nurse her at 5:30pm and 7:30pm so we have also been adding a bottle of formula/WCM at bedtime to help hold her over through teh night.

Do you think you could just let her CIO? Olive is such a good little sleeper and I assume solids are fully established, so she's just waking out of habit by now, right?

I think because she's a but older it may take longer but since she was nap trained so easily, it's just a matter of biting the bullet!

We night weaned my son around 6.5 months when we sleep trained. He had been showing signs that he wasn't waking because he was hungry so my husband took over sleep training my son so he couldn't smell my milk. I continued to nurse during the day so we just made sure to put him immediately on the breast when he woke up.

Olive is 11 months old and she wakes up once a night. Last night she went to bed at 6:30pm, woke up at 1:00, I nursed her, and she woke up for the day at 7:15. It hasn't been that bad so I've just lived with it. But now that I'm planning on nursing beyond one year, I want to consider night weaning because I think it'll eliminate her wake up.

Have any of you successfully night weaned but continued breastfeeding in the day? How did you do it?
