@coopsmama: The first day made me want to give up. He spent more time peeing on the floor than in the potty. DH and I took turns sitting and reading books to him on the potty literally ALL day. But by the end of the week he kind of had it and two months later he hasn't had an accident out of the house in a while.

Yes! DD2 is 18 months and ask to go pee pee and poo poo constantly. She's started in the past 2-3 weeks and I feel like I should take advantage / respect her desire to want to learn? But I also just can't handle potty training right now? I set her on the toilet at bath time and (most of the time) when she asks. She pees and poops on it maybe 65% of the time? She recognizes when she needs to go and will actively try to when I put her on.

@brownepiano: That's what I keep wondering - if maybe we will just have to deal with a million accidents for a few days because she is so relentless about asking to go. We've already gone 3x in the three hours she's been up with no success. She also asks me to change her diaper every time it even gets a little wet.

We started with DS at 22 months. I tried teaching him earlier, but with no luck (and I wasn't ready to commit 100%). We did a basic pants-less week. The first day was horrible, but I was surprised how fast he learned to use his muscles. I think doing it early was good for us in a way because he really wants to please us and is really motivated by little things (like raisins...).

So, my 19 month old seems to think that she NEEDS to use the potty. She sees big brother using it and frequently asks (probably 4-5 times a day) to use the potty. She has figured out how to take her leggings/pants/shorts/whatever off and take her diaper off and so half the time she is running around bottomless wailing "potty!" :silly:

Anyways, I texted my husband and said I'm pretty sure she has her heart set on learning BUT I am so not prepared for this. I don't know how to teach someone that young - and she's sat on the potty a LOT over the last month and has only gone potty once. (She actually went poop one of the first times she did it, so I know she at least gets the concept.)

Both of my kids have seemed to want to learn relatively young. My son taught himself at 26 months - he would take off his diaper and go in the toilet so one day I bought him underwear and we never looked back. He just seemed to grasp it more than she does, though.

Has anyone ever taught their eager one and half year old successfully? :)
