When Lo was 8-9 months old we sucked water up in a straw, covered the top of the straw to trap the water in it, then let Lo drink from the other end.
She picked it up really quickly. I have 2 Zoli cups but hardly use them since Lo prefers to drink from one of our cups with a regular straw.

When LO started solids at 6 months, we also introduced the straw cup and after a few tries, she learned how to suck. We never used a sippy cup - I found it too hard to drink from!

You can also use those pouches of food, it's a similar sucking action.

My LO is almost 7 months and we just switched to a straw sippy (we first introduced a regular sippy) but now give her the straw sippy when she's getting her solids. She's not drinking a ton of water but I can tell she's using the straw...sometimes she gets too much and chokes and she spits out some water.

I think she got it on her own bc we have been giving her vitamin D drops since she was a few weeks old (as advised by her pediatrician) and it comes out of a little syringe...so I think she understood liquid comes out of the skinny plastic thing so she knows she should get liquid out of the straw too. Her straw sippy is super little and the straw is pretty small/skinny so she is able to get it in her little mouth easily

@mrs. wagon: mrs wagon is actually the person who inspired me to try straw cups. charlie actually took to them right away without us doing anything, and they were much easier for him to use than sippy cups. charlie also loves his camelbak -- we bought one after mrs. wagon visited and charlie loved wagon jr's camelbak.

try her tips on getting your lo to drink from a straw!

We gave LO one of those squeezable fruit pouches recently. At first I helped her squeeze the purée out but after a little while, she starting sucking on her own. Then I thought to try giving her a straw bottle again and she immediately knew to start sucking.

We started with a camelbak and the Tommy Tippee straw cups. He drinks from those like he does a bottle. We lucked out and he can drink from whatever we give him (cup, sippy, straw etc)

@Andrea: The foogo would probably be good because it's nice and slim, and made of metal so it insulates the milk.

@mrs. wagon: we use the camelbak for water, too, but I don't have a good one for milk. DD always whines for milk at random times so we still carry milk around.

@Andrea: for on-the-go we just take a camelbak water bottle. If we need milk on the go we buy it (gas station, mcdonalds, etc) and use a regular straw. For a while we used a foogo straw cup but it got tough to clean and to remember to put it back in the fridge, so we just buy milk wherever we go. And if there's nowhere to buy milk he just drinks water.

I did the same as Mrs. Wagon. It took DD longer than 10 minutes though!

@mrs. wagon: just curious, what straw cup do you use now for on-the-go? For milk.

I used take n toss straw cups. You take the straw and put the end in water and put your finger over the top, then put the end in baby's mouth and let go, dribbling the water into their mouth. Keep doing that and baby will learn that water comes from the straw and will start sucking on the end of the straw to get the water.... then just put the straw in the water and see if they will suck on the straw correctly. Wagon Jr. learned this in 10 minutes!

The take n toss straws get chewed up pretty quickly but you can move onto either soft rubber straws or a hard plastic straw.

DS has the Playtex First Sipper sippy cup, which he drinks out of really well, but the spout is pretty soft and he's started chewing on it. I want to change sippy cups and DS really likes my reusable cup with a hard plastic straw, but can't figure out how to drink from a straw.
