I was very intrigued by BWL but my husband was very opposed to it. The choking would scare us and she would vomit it all out. We gave her very small pieces but she would just swallow it whole and choke. A few times like that and I kept on feeding purées for a long time. BLW just didn't work out for us. I started feeding her more soft, chunky foods at around 10 months instead of purées (chicken noodle soup mashed up with a fork, broccoli cheddar soup, etc) and now she is a great eater at 14 months.

Like others, we just started offering food that had a bit more chunk to it. I ended up taking a CPR course just to help make me feel more comfortable with the choking business. L still chokes a lot and he's 1.

I gave small bites of food, smaller than the size of a cheerios. I never did the thicker purees, because LO did not like them. Things that might be good early on were puffs, cheerios, banana, avocado, sweet potato, and chicken. There was a small amount of gagging, which is natural in learning to eat. The pieces I used were small enough that I was not too worried about choking. I did a pretty abrupt transition right at 9 months when I introduced table food, because LO liked it much better than purees, and it was so much easier, because LO can feed himself.

It took my daughter a while to come around to chunkier food. A few things we tried:

- making her purees a bit chunkier (we made her food ourselves, mostly just steamed veggies and cheese mixes, so we started blending them a little less)

-offering small bites of soft things and/or things that melt easily - Cheerios was really her first solid food, and she took to cooked carrots, watermelon, things that dissolved easily.

The best thing, I found, is to keep offering bites - just a few along with the purees, keep encouraging it with every meal, and to remember that gagging is normal and a good learning tool (freaky as it is to us). It's how they figure out what they can handle. My kiddo has a super sensitive gag reflex so we delt with this a lot but it passed.

We're working on moving from purees to table food too. I know BLW is really popular, but it just didn't work for us. DS just hated the texture of real food at first. So we started off with level 1 purees and now we do a mix of 2's and 3's. I also give him little bites of my food, which he's starting to like a lot more. Over the weekend at one meal I gave him teeny pieces of avocaodo, and another meal I gave him teeny pieces of chicken and cheese. Oh, and I give him bites one at a time. So I know that all he has in his mouth is one tiny piece of food so he's not likely to choke on that, even if it sets off his gag reflex a little.

Even as recently as a couple weeks ago when I gave him table food or food not pureed enough he would eat a little and then get tired of chewing it and refuse any more.

So I think we'll slowly keep transitioning over. I hate paying for purees and right now my food processor is packed, but at the same time it's nice knowing that what I'm giving him is healthy. I'll have to rethink a lot of what we eat in order to make it baby friendly.

How did you transition from purees to more chunky real food? LO has started this fabulous (sarcasm) habit of spitting out her food at the end or middle or whenever she decides. I'm wondering if she is over purees and wants to eat more solid food. The thing is, she gags/chokes herself really easily and it freaks me out when she does it. I just bought a bunch of purees, so we are going to finish those out. I am just not comfortable with BLW, so I need some help figuring this out.
