We slowly weaned from formula to milk. We tried cold turkey and he hated it. So we started mixing milk with formula and gradually added more milk than formula. DS still gets milk before bed (it's a comfort thing) - he's 18 mos. We do go to a sippy but there are times where he really wants the bottle. I'm not going to be stressed out about it now. It helps in calming him.

We started mixing formula and milk. So we'd start with mostly formula and add some milk, then slowly decrease formula and increase milk, until it was all milk. We had no issues. Later, we started offering her a cup of milk with breakfast in place of her morning bottle. Slowly switched all bottles to cups. The evening bottle was the hardest, but we finally got there.

I would keep her bedtime bottle and start offering milk in a straw cup or sippy cup at meals. You might keep the wake up bottle too. With DS2 we went from EBF with the odd bottle to taking milk at meals and it probably took a few weeks to really get the hang of it. Once he got the hang of it I just nursed morning and night. With our first he was totally on bottles (formula) so I mixed with the formula for a bit until he got used to it and then once he was totally on whole milk we transitioned to sippy.

Just want to chime in about the straw - don't know what kind of sippy you hope to use but my mom taught my DS to use a straw in a few minutes by putting some liquid in a straw, covering it with her finger and then holding it above his mouth and putting it in. As soon as she felt him sucking on it she moved her finger so he got the liquid. I'm sure some kids get it right away but we had tried just giving him a cup with a straw several times, and he got frustrated with it.

We weren't on formula when we transition but LO didn't even bat an eye when it was cow milk instead of BM in his bottles. He also picked up the sippy cup right away. One day we just didn't give him bottles anymore and he could have cared less. We still do a sippy with milk before bed, and he is not ready to give that up so I have no advice on that. He's 17 months and loves his milk!! My advice is to not stress, introduce the straw and sippy cups. Hopefully LO won't even notice that its milk not formula!

First of all - it might end up being not a big deal, try not to stress too much.

We held onto the bottle till around 14-15 mos with both of my DSs and thought the transition would be tough but even with the nighttime bottle (not feeding to sleep, just part of the bedtime routine) neither of them batted an eye when we stopped giving it. I think it was harder on my DH who really enjoyed the feeding bonding time. As for the milk, if it is going to bother you to give cows milk before the ped visit then just buy more formula to get you through. However if there haven't been allergy issues etc, you should be fine just starting to give cows milk. You can experiment - try giving it cold in a bottle, cold in a sippy cup, warmed in a bottle, etc. My main advice is to start with whatever is simplest for you so that if they do ok with that, you can just stick with it. (ie don't warm the milk if they are just as happy drinking it cold.) I know some kids are pickier about things than others, hope the transition is smooth for you and that other mamas here have better advice than me ;)

I've been coasting at this parenting the last few months but now I'm facing this transition and it brings back memories of transitioning from RNP to crib, from swaddle sack to arms-free, from EBF to formula. . . . aaaaah :silly:

My little girl just turned one. We're on our last can of formula and her 12 mo check up is in a week and a half. I don't really want to buy more formula, but I had been thinking I wouldn't transition until I had the ped's advice.

Am I overthinking this? I don't know where to start. Do I put whole milk in bottles? A mixture? Or transition her by giving her formula in sippy cups?

Right now she's on the small side, but healthy. She gets a bottle at wake up, a couple during the day after meals, and a night time bottle. Sometimes she eats a lot at meals, sometimes she pushes food around on her tray. I guess I'm scared that somehow I'm going to starve her/not give her enough food to make up for not getting formula anymore.

I'm sure this is just classic FTM overthinking, and I learned lots of lessons from the Hive with other transitions, so I want to hear from you if you want to share - when did you transition your LO from bottle to cup? From formula to milk? Any secrets to your success or must have baby gear that helped?

Thanks for helping this anxious mama out
