I weaned at 8 months. The one piece of advice I would give is to take it slowly! You really need to do it gradually so as to avoid major pain and discomfort.

I dropped one feed at a time, starting with the day feeds, and gave it a week or so until I dropped the next feed.

It was all fine until the last one. I had major discomfort and felt like my boobs were going to explode! I had major hardness in one of my boobs and was worried about mastisis. It was fine a week later.

I wasn't pumping at all ( for other reasons) so had I been that would have helped alleviate things slightly.

So take it slowly! You probably need to take 2 months. I did have a really good supply so if you don't the process could be easier. Good luck!

@anbanan15: He is 10 months old and I'm hoping to have him be weaned by his first birthday, if not a little after? I'm really just hoping he will wean himself! Lol

@boogs: How old is your LO and when do you plan on start weaning? DS is 9.5 months and although I want to continue giving him breastmilk, I'm not (personally) comfortable breastfeeding after age 1, but don't plan on starting to wean until after that milestone.

I think about this often. My LO never takes bottles so I feel like it's not going to go well for us.

@MH.ABROAD: That is fantastic! I will have to keep that in mind, because I have a gut feeling DS is going to be hard to give up his boobs.

@CCHO14: Yes DS gets a bottle a few times a week. He will actually suck anything, so I don't think the transition from going to bottles/sippy full time is going to be an issue. I feel getting him to not look for or try to expose my breast is going to be the bigger issue. I know he still depends on it for comfort. And yes I plan on giving him brestmilk as long as possible because well that is really our only option with his food allergy situation (I secretly cannot wait until I can eat normally again, but I would not give up this time for the world).

i weaned just a few weeks ago. I was prone to clogs and didn't want that to happen so I just pumped less and less over the course of two weeks. (I met a mommy today who weaned in 3 days!) I went from pumping 5x's a day to 4, to 3, and so on.

LO was never a great nurser so it was fine. He was already receiving breast milk and formula in bottles so he didn't miss the boob much. I do catch him going for boob at night before bed (so he still must look to it for comfort) but it was traumatic and he doesn't cry.

Does your LO get bottles now? If so , I would suggest that you start slowly increasing the bottles around the time of weaning so it is a slow transition. Good luck! At least you are still planning on giving LO breastmilk! That is great :)

This isn't advice, just a funny story. When my mom wanted to wean my little sister, she put tea tree oil on her nipples and when my little sister said "Yuck!", mom told her "Oh, my milk isn't good anymore. Guess you are too old." So she quit.

Not sure that's the best plan though... haha.

Good luck!

I'm not ready to start the process for a few more months, but have been thinking about it a lot lately. I plan on transistioning to just pumping shortly after DS's first birthday and still giving him breastmilk as long as possible during the second year, but will still need to wean and was interested in knowing how some of you went about making the transistion.

Was it at all tramatic for you or your LO? Was it something that you took your time taking over a period of weeks/months, or did you use a more cold turkey approach? Any advice or tricks your found to work wonders?
