grapefruit seed extract tablets (250mg 3x a day)-cleared up the pain about two doses

there is also a liquid form which you can drink/use as a wash but I've never used that

@Ms.SK: I'm not an expert but I would definitely be treating baby too! My LO had thrush for ten days before she displayed any symptoms and the danger in only treating you is that you continue to pass it back and forth between you.

Good luck and hope you get rid of it soon!

...and it came back! I knew I started this post for a reason. I am trying Lotrimin and will do GV starting tomorrow (I have a high level meeting in NYC and can't get my suit purple). My LC told me I don't have to treat the babies everytime since they have never had symptoms. Lotrimin seems to be working and FAST.

LO and I battled thrush for two months and you are so very right about it sucking!

My recommendation would be to ask your Dr to prescribe Daktarin for your LO's. Nilstat only has about a 35% success but Daktarin knocked our thrush out in about three days!

@MrsRcCar: Thanks! I actually don't have it right now. But I am "building up my supply" of treatment options and didn't see a thread like this so I figured while it was on my mind I would give it a parking place on the boards.
@T.H.O.U.: I don't use lanolin but I sware by Coconut Oil. As the commercial says I put that sh*t on everything. I use it for diaper rash, baby pimples, baby dry skin, my burn I spoke about above, etc. It is awesome!

@Ms.SK: I was able to stop the thrush before she got it.

My mom was the one that recommended the MoM treatment. She said she used it on my sister when she had thrush at an older age in the mouth.

When I used it, I would use a cotton ball to "wash" my nipple and breast with vinegar (or a 50/50 vinegar water solution). Then I would put the MoM on a cotton ball and dab it on there and let it air dry. Before my next nursing I would go wash it off with water.

I have heard to avoid lanolin with thrush. It just keeps things moist and a better breading ground.

@MsLipGloss: not so funny but I was boiling everything this last go around and I have a huge steam burn. I decided that I was no longer allowed to boil things myself at that point, the nanny or my husband would have to do it. Then I said to myself, sometimes it is the cost of doing business and safety so I went and bought new stuff. I cut myself a lot of slack since I am running after 2 of them. I work out of the home and this is just one of those areas I don't mind spending some money to make my life easier.

@littlebittyhouse: I wish I had the money to keep replacing everything. This is a case where breastfeeding isn't free. I have 14 bottles (a 2 day supply plus 1 extra per baby). Plus there are always several pacifiers floating around my house.

@MsLipGloss: I know my supply dipped both times I have had to take medicine and I am always shocked that it comes back. With the twins I have to pump a minimum of 20 oz at work to leave for them and some of those thrush days I have only gotten 11 oz (thank G-d for my crazy freezer stash). But here I am 1 week post medicine back up to 22 oz each day. I wish I could tell everyone that freaks out about their supply how if they just ride it out it comes back.

@Ms.SK: It is the absolute worst! I got thrush right around 7-8 weeks which is just when LO and I had hit our breastfeeding stride, so to speak. It basically ruined my ability to create a freezer stash prior to my return to work at 12 weeks. Augh!!!!

Thanks for the ideas! We don't have it now but I want to be prepared incase. I actually have Genetian violet and directions to use it but am a little afraid. It is quite toxic plus do I really want my kids to have purple mouth's for a week? You have to use it for 3 days and the stains last longer...Did you use it to success?
I don't use breast pads, I don't repeat wear my bras or the kids clothes since this started. I will try the vinegar if this pops up again. Have any of you tried Lotrimin in place of the vinegar?

I never had it too bad, but I agree with what @littlebittyhouse said about the vinegar rinse. I did 1 tbsp white vinegar to 1 cup water and then used a cotton ball to dab it on after a feeding. That seemed to really help for me!

UGH thrush is the worst - I had it twice and was done with ever getting it again.

What worked for me was:
Boil bottle nipples daily - replace weekly

Boil paci daily - replace weekly

I had a 'thrush laundry basket' anything that came into contact with my breasts or breast milk (including spitup) went into the thrush basket. I washed the items nightly with hot water and bleach. I basically lived in white nursing tanks for two weeks.

I found that the disposable nursing pads were contributing to the thrush - when I stopped using them the thrush didn't come back. There are wool ones on the market if you need them to prevent random leaks.

Did a vinegar rinse after every feeding and then let my nipples air dry.

It was exhausting but we kicked it for good and have not had it since. I'm sorry mama - the yeastie beasties are the worst :/

I have battled Thrush two times over the past two months. We were treating the twins with Nystatin and I took Dyflucan - all of us for 3 weeks. We stopped and two weeks later I got it again. We used the same treatment but I added probiotics back into my daily routine. It is so painful and I am tired of this medicine routine. We have thrown out all the pacifiers, bottle nipples (they get bottles of BM from the nanny), steralized everything that goes near their mouth, etc. What did you do for success? I can't have a 3rd round without going crazy!
