I assume activities will be a wash because we are already doing those on top of day care costs. But we will have to factor in after school care. Whatever the surplus is will go into the kids college savings accounts.

We looked into the cost of afterschool care once the kids enter the public school system, and the difference between afterschool care and our full-day daycare costs is actually not that significant because our daycare rate is really good and afterschool care is expensive for what you get. I see the rest of the money easily going to activities, summer camps, clothes, school supplies, food, etc.

We aren't there yet, but from what I've heard, it just means that money will be spent other places (after school care, extra-curricular activities, etc.) I personally find that hard to believe because we're paying about $2k per month for daycare right now.

We already said we will then make payments the same payment to a college savings and regular savings account instead.

@looch: This is our plan too.

We'll take whatever the difference is between daycare costs and the school costs and put that into their 529s.

@wonderstruck: same. We are living budgeted right now and that's only with one in daycare. I know two will only be worse.

When both kids are done with dc we will sell our house and buy one in a better school district. We actually hope to do that before the oldest goes to school with some help from my parents. Our savings and college funds are at a stand still as well so we will add to that.

DS is starting 1st grade in the fall but we will still have before and after care fees - so its been slowly going down the past 2 years but I never seem to have "extra" money.

In Sept I will be saving $300 a month and my plan is to move that to my savings every month just as I would if I were still paying that bill.

So...for us (assuming we stop at #2) this will coincide with DH finishing paying off his student loans. Combined with DC that will be almost a $3K influx of extra money....holy cow I cannot wait!

I imagine we will add to our 529's at that point and DH will start maxing his 401K (currently I max and DH does the minimum to get his employers contribution). This is also around the time we will likely start taking some bigger trips with the kiddos - so we'll save more towards that!

We are almost there, starting next month! You are right, the activities will cost money, but it is still a good chunk of savings. Maybe we will be even more aggressive with paying off our house, or maybe just put more in investment. We already do max out our 401ks, IRAs, and such.

Honestly for us we'll just be able to have some breathing room financially. Our saving accounts/401ks/stocks/etc are pretty much at a standstill as we get through the years of two in daycare. Looking forward to having money to put in savings, take vacations, not budget out for every little thing I want to buy myself, etc.

I should note though that it's more extreme for us because I'm finishing my degree and I'll graduate and be working again around the same time my oldest finishes daycare.

We aren't there yet, but I think we'll end up spending a portion of it on extra activities (music/dance lessons, summer camps) and then we'll be able to accelerate our savings--either retirement, college or otherwise! Woohoo!

Well, we won't have an influx of money because no more daycare, but I GET TO GO BACK TO WORK!!! eee! I'm very excited and we'll feel like we have so much extra money! Of course I'm pregnant with our last, so we have a good five years, but it is coming :)

I'm not there yet either but I can't wait for the day when there are no more daycare payments! It's def like a second mortgage payment and we live in a high cost of living city! Bleh. We do plan to stick most of their daycare tuition into the kids 529 accounts tho. So we won't be seeing much of it for a long time. womp womp. It will make me happy to see it going into their higher education tho.

LO turns 3 in late fall, so we have a few more years of daycare to pay for before she is old enough for kindergarten. I'm so glad she is in a great place and learning a lot, but I am looking forward to not writing the equivalent of a second mortgage payment each month.

I keep imagining this huge influx of cash into our budget once LO is old enough for public school. I'm sure some of it will be eaten up with things like school supplies, after-school care, extracurriculars, and whatnot, but I'm assuming it won't be quite as expensive as full-time care is now. I'd love to know how this worked for you guys. Did you wind up spending the equivalent of daycare on other things? Were you able to re-purpose some of that money?

How did the transition from daycare to public school alter your budget?
