Congrats on having the babies! Our first night home, my mum was staying with us so she really helped out. It was totally fine. Also, we were in lala land and spent a ton of time just staring at her:)

1st Hint of Daddy's Little Girl came out that first night home:
We put both babies down together in the bassinet as they had been in the hospital. Baby girl whimpered and my husband jumped up, picked her up and took her into the bed with him. He was such a softie. So when baby boy started to fuss I figured what the heck, and brought him to sleep with me.

The first night home was actually probably the best night of her first week. She was probably sleepy from screaming all weekend in the hospital, lol.

It was a bit overwhelming the moment we walked through the door as we tried to figure out where everyone was sleeping. We had a packed house since my MIL decided to stay with us also instead of staying at the apartment near our shop as we initially thought. DS felt overwhelmed and was wailing like crazy till I locked me and him in our master bedroom to calm down. After we figured out who was sleeping where, the rest of the night was fine.

Stressful. She couldn't latch because I was sooooo engorged. I would get her back to sleep and then worry because she couldn't eat. I called our lc in the morning at 7 am and we saw her that afternoon. It was much better the second night.

Stressful. DD had pretty bad jaundice and didn't want to wake up for anything, including food. When we did manage to wake her, it was impossible to keep her up long enough to eat more than a few sips. I spent basically the first three days and nights at home trying to wake and feed her, round the clock.

@Smurfette: ha same! That was the only night we set an alarm. She was never going to let us get even close to the three hour mark. Other than that, I don't remember much about the first night. Time (apparently even just three months) heals all wounds :)

I missed the babies being born! Congratulations. The first night home was hell. My milk hadn't come in and my nipples were bleeding (didn't discover nipple shields until a few days later!) and in my sleepless desperation I made a bottle of formula from a sample. DH offered to feed him but I refused saying it was my fault. I sobbed the entire time I fed him repeating over and over "I'm so sorry." Wow. I hadn't even remembered that until now! I wish I could hug then me and tell me it will all work out.

It takes a while to get in a routine. We had to make a rule that we didn't talk during night feedings or we ended up whisper fighting. :silly: We brought the boys home on the same day and the doctors wanted us to continue waking them up every 2-3 hours to eat. We were so tired from feeding them so often that the first few weeks are kind of a blur! I do remember the first few nights I checked on them ALLLL the time. It was hard to go from having a million monitors reassuring me that they were breathing and okay to having nothing.

It was pretty much what I expected. I didn't sleep much and she was up every couple of hours to nurse. DH and I didn't realize we should be quiet, not make eye contact, etc., so she would wake up and we'd sing to her and tell her how cute she was. Then we'd wonder why it was taking her so long to go back to sleep...oops!

We just looked at each other not knowing that the heck we were doing. She refused to sleep anywhere but in our arms, so we slept with her on our chests, worried about not being able to see her, and changed approximately 1 million diapers.

@Smurfette: ha! Same here!

I remember not knowing what the hell to do with this tiny little fragile baby that they sent me home with with no how-to manual. He slept in his swing, and I couldn't take my eyes off him because I was afraid to stop watching him.

I watched her sleep the whole night, didn't get a wink of sleep. She was in the NICU for 5 days, so I was used to being away from her when she slept (under lights so they wanted me out of the room) so having her in the same room was a huge change for me, every sound she made I freaked out.

a lot better than the "stay in" at the hospital that they offer when your baby stays in special care/nicu as a trial run! that was a scary night. it was basically 3 hours down, up to eat/poop, 3 hours down, up to eat/poop. Freaking clockwork. I don't really remember it.

I actually think that E did really well at home because the nurses in the nursery broke her in for us, lol. She was there a week, so maybe your babies will do better than you think :)

Terrible! We discovered the hard way, and over and over, that he wouldn't sleep anywhere but in our arms. For some reason it took allllll night for us to get. We kept putting him down over and over just for him to scream. Yeah, steep learning curve haha.

Dont' worry - that is totally normal! Our first night was the absolute worst. I found what helped us was deciding in advance who would handle what wakeups, then initiate a "no talking" rule during MOTN feedings. You just have to trust that the other person is doing their best and back off. Plus you can't both always be up at the same time - at some point someone has to be rested.

And during the day, you have to agree to trust each other. If DH wants to try something you don't think will work, just let him. The truth is, no one - not even the 'experts' - know how to soothe your baby. So you just have to learn by trial and error and try everything.

I didn't sleep a wink. I was terrified the baby would suffocate in her sleep so I just stared at her. Hubs was great though. He handled every diaper change and helped me get situated for each nursing session. And if I remember correctly he took her in the morning so I could nap. I was a hot mess those first few days *cough* weeks *cough*

Our son did great! DH & I bickered & fought the whole time! He was hyper sensitive & I was a little too anal. Hopefully we can get a system down for routine & communication before sissy comes home otherwise we are screwed!
