@hergreenapples: my doctor also asked about my mothers and sisters labors, to gauge if he thought mine would go the same. both me and my sister(different mothers though) had to be induced due to no progress, but once my sister was induced she progressed quickly and had her babies fast.

@hergreenapples: Part of the question sheet I got from my birth center asked about my mother's labors and any sisters labors. I suppose it's just another thing to take into consideration. I've also heard of women being classified as high risk because of complications their mothers had while pregnant.

My mom was late with both of us, but had an epidural with both so it was pretty easy.

I went almost 3 weeks early and had a natural labour, so very different from my mama.

My mom had my brother within 15 minutes of checking into the hospital and he was just under 10lbs. She didn't feel anything until it was time to push him on out! No chance of getting an epidural.
This story terrified me. I was so worried I wouldn't know I was in labor with DS.

With me she went into labor in the evening, had me by noon the next day. She did have an epidural.

I was induced due to pre-e and had a giant episiotomy with vacuum extraction. 8lbs+ baby.

I'm totally interested in reading these responses, as I just asked my midwife this very question last week. She said that there are too many variables in place to really be able to know if there's a genetic component, not to mention the fact that we have genetic material from both our mothers and our fathers.

However, she said that, anecdotally, it's been her experience that women who have the same body type as their mothers are more likely to have similar labours. I hope this is true, as my mother and I are shaped identically and she had an easy eight hour labour and what the OB told her was a "textbook" delivery when I was born (and I am her only child)!

My mom had long labors. My older brother was over 24 hours, I was around 14 and my younger brother was the shortest at 10. She had us all naturally...even my 9 pound, 13 oz brother!

I had an emergency C-section with our LO after a 14 hour labor with him getting stuck on my pelvic bone. LO was also only 6 pounds, 13 oz...3 pounds smaller than my younger brother...and I still couldn't get him out!

My mom had super fast labors with my older sister and I (1.5 hrs both times), and we were both right on time. She was in her early 20's though. When she had my younger sister and twin brothers, she was in her 30's and labored for more than a day with my sister, then had an emergency c-section with my brothers. So obviously, age had something to do with it.

I had a breech baby and had to have a scheduled c-section. To this day, I wonder about what my labor would have been like in comparison to hers. We have a history of precipitous labor in the family, so I was excited to see if I would follow suit.

My entire pregnancy was like my mom's so I expected my labor to be similar. She was induced with all 4 of us about 1-2 week after her due dates but had really fast labors. I was born 45 minutes after she was induced. However, while I was induced, I was in labor for 24 hours. I wasn't mentally prepared for that since I figured I would be quick.

my mom was induced for whatever reason 4 weeks early with me that failed, went into labor the next day, had to use forceps to get me out. both the other 2(younger than me) went late but she went into labor naturally and gave birth relatively quickly.

i had to be induced at 40w 6d with DS due to lack of progress. still no progress and DS heart rate kept dropping after 8ish hours, ended with a c-section. #2 will be a scheduled c-section. so different!

My mom had fast labors for all three children.... but she also labored longer at home then I did. She sat at home, made dinner for my dad, waited for him to eat, etc. I was like no way, I'm going to the hospital NOW!

My mom had a c-section for both my brother and I. She also required some extra prenatal care because of reproductive issues. I had a 14 hour labor and delivery with a vaginal birth. She even told me when I was pregnant that my labor would be similar to her sister's and it was. I was surprised by this because I had bladder surgery at 16 and thought that I would have pregnancy & L & D problems, but didn't.

My mom went 10days late with me. She went into labor on her own, and labored for about 7 hours. She went 23 days late withb my sister, got induced, they overdosed the pitocin, so she got an epi too slow the contractions. She labored for 45 minutes. I was induced at a week late, labored for 27 hours, including 3 hours of pushing, finally needing vacuum assist. So....totally different experiences!

All of her kids were at least a week late (I was 18 days late). With her first pregnancy (twins) one was breech and posterior, so she had back labor like I did, but she's a rockstar and went all natural. With me and my other brother she didn't even have the option of an epidural because she progressed so fast...they just got her into the bed with my brother and I was nearly born in the parking lot...she made it to a room but not to the bed, lol.

In contrast, mine was partially medicated + back labor + 32 hours start to finish and he was born 2 days early.
