@rahlyrah: I was SO worried about this. Our dogs are definitely part of the family and were our first babies. We have a little dog, toy fox terrier, and a full sized yellow lab. No concerns (other than clumsiness/excitement) with the lab but we thought our terrier might have issues as he's kind of a spoiled princess and a little older (8). They sniffed at him a lot but now they kind of ignore him. Our small dog honestly sleeps a majority of the day in the closet, always has.

We have tried to keep the dogs routine as 'normal'a as possible. They still sleep with us, eat at the same times, get good attention when we get home, so that's been consistent and I think helped. Good luck!

From the minute we arrived home from the hospital our dog accepted the baby. As soon as the baby cries the dog runs over and looks at the baby and then she runs to get me. It is like she is making sure I hear the baby crying. She also sleeps next to the bassinet in our room. Our dog is absolutly sweet.
However the cat is a whole other story. The cat wants NOTHING to do with the baby.As soon as the baby makes noise the cat is out of there. He is also very jealous of the baby.

We do make sure to give our animals one on one attention to try and make them still feel as loved as before.

I've heard to bring something that smells like the baby home so they can get used to the scent.

I'm worried about this too,

@Mrs. Superhero: Yeah, Dewey already pees everywhere as a dominance thing with Maximus. I now keep him in doggy diaper!

@Bao: I'm glad she came around!

@LemonLong: So sweet! Maybe Dew will become attached to the baby the way he is with me.

@brownie: Ah! So cute! Well, except the nipping part. :)

Our dogs didn't have any problems until after he invaded their space (the floor) at a couple months old. The little dog even nipped him at around 12 months. Now the little dog tolerates him and the big dog loves and protects him. He took little dog for a walk around the block today.

Our animals are super curious. They want to lick the baby all the time! I have a lap dog who I thought was going to have issues, but so far he has been all about the baby. When she cries, he cries along with her! He is never too far away from her. My lab mix and cat aren't quite as interested.

Oh, and we didn't do anything to prep them beforehand.

Our cat HATED our LO, she would hiss at her and not come around, but she has warmed up now.

We have two dogs and I am wondering when/how to prepare them for the new baby. I honestly think our Golden Retriever will be fine. Curious, but fine. Our pug, on the other hand, is attached at my hip. DH calls him my soul familiar because wherever I am, Dewey is not far behind. I worry that he is going to be jealous of the baby taking the attention away from him. I don't think he would be aggressive at all but I do worry about him taking it out on my house! He already has dominance issues with the Golden.

How did your pets react? Did you do anything to prepare them before hand or just hope for the best?
