At first my dog HATED my LO. I wasn't producing milk so she would scream and scream and scream, and every time we walked into the room he would walk out. It made me pretty sad. And then we got to the stage where he would tolerate her but she was scared of him and she would cry at him.

Now that she's older they both love each other for the most part. He loves to go and lick under her chin because it's always drooly, and that's her big tickle spot so it makes her giggle. She does like to torture him sometimes, but just out of love of course. She's trying to play with him and doesn't know any better, but when he gets annoyed he'll just get up and walk away. He's such a good boy!

Our two cats are very, very good with our LO. They will come up and sniff him but are always very gentle. One of the cats also does the head-butting thing, which definitely means she "loves" him :) She has found there's just enough room for her on the glider arm when I'm nursing my LO, so she will just sit and cuddle with us.

However...the cats are acting out lately because they do not receive the same amount of attention. One of them ate through my tubing to my breast pump when I wasn't looking. They also have eaten through the cords to my phone charger, the video monitor, and the white noise machine. They have knocked over their water and food bowls so much in the past couple weeks. And the biggest issue was that we found poop in our tub last weekend...that was a lot of fun. My husband and I are trying to be better with cuddling with them after our LO goes to bed...definitely a work in progress, though! If things don't improve in the next month, I'm planning on making a vet appointment to see if they have any suggestions. There's no way I would ever be able to give my kitties away as they were my first babies, but I hate that they don't receive the same attention they're used to. Funny thing is that my LO is 3.5 months old now, and we're just seeing these problems come up in the past month or so.

Our cat is *wonderful* with LO. We were worried because our cat is very aggressive to all strangers and is very territorial; although she is very, very loving with my husband and I. She got a lot calmer while I was pregnant, and gives LO a lot of space. She will scrunch up against the carrier while LO is in it, and will sniff her sometimes, and rub her head against LO's carrier or chairs but that's it. She doesn't ever try to get in the crib or the various bouncy chairs even though she is a very curious cat usually. She will also take a treat from LO very, very gently (we put the treat on LO's hand as she is too young to give the cat treats by herself). When people come over, the cat sits in front of LO and dislikes anyone coming close to LO, and she will hiss at people who try to come too close to LO unless my husband or I are also standing there. It makes me SOOO mad when people just get rid of pets because they get pregnant or have a baby - most pets are more than happy to accept LO's into the family.

Here's a pic of the "sisters" together this weekend:

How cute. We have two cats and they pretty much ignored DS when we brought him home. When we started laying him on the floor for tummy time our younger cat would lay on the floor with him. Never touched him, just wanted to be close. DS is now 6 months old and the cat still lays near him whenever he on the floor. That may change once DS starts really crawling though....

I don't know yet (LO isn't here) but I'm curious to follow this thread! And that picture is too funny - does she like the vibrations, too??

When I was pregnant I was really worried about how our three cats would react to DS. They're all mostly well-behaved (almost never aggressive, don't claw/scratch, friendly-ish to humans) and two of them are super dependent on DH (like they follow him from room to room and if he's not standing there's at least one of them on him). The third is...well, the best way I can describe her is friendly but stand-offish. She's very good at communicating when she wants something (like food or affection), but once she's satisfied she leaves. She's not scared of strangers, and will demand affection from them (and then drop them like a hot potato after a minute or two).

We tried doing things like putting foil under his crib sheets (didn't work), playing audio files of crying babies and bringing home the shirt and hat he wore the first day so they could smell him. As my pregnancy progressed I started limiting the amount of time they could be on my lap (which became necessary as I blew up--they used to sleep on my stomach at night) so I wouldn't be cutting them off from me cold turkey.

I shouldn't have worried. Two of the cats (the ones who are in love with DH) occasionally come up and smell DS's head, but otherwise pretty much ignore him. The third cat, who of the three was the one I was worried about, is in love with DS. She follows us from room to room and sits next to us. She butts her head against his (her means of affection). The only time of the other cats got aggressive with him (she hissed at him), Penny immediately got in front of him and hissed back at the other cat, then came over and sniffed and butted DS.

How did your pets react to your LO? Did you try to prepare them beforehand?

(My only problem with Penny is that she thinks everything we have for the baby is for her. We're constantly shooing her out of the crib, bassinet, swing, bouncer...)
