My family has big mouths so they are spreading the word to extended family. We make sure and tell everyone we clearly, no Facebook posts until WE post something.

I didn't think about setting it to ask me to approve each tag. Good idea!

@LindsayInNY: i'm a little worried about that too, but not so much with anyone really close to me. i have some young cousins that don't go to the bathroom without telling fb about it, so i'm more worried that they'll post something. but i figure most of my friends wouldn't see it anyway. we are in such an oversharing world these days it's hard to keep anything off of social media sites!

We let our parents tell. I just said no facebook until we are ready for the world to know, and nobody posted.

@Pirouette: That's a good idea - approving FB comments! My fear is my sister or MIL or someone saying some thing on FB period - even if they don't tag me. =/

yay ok i have set it so comments have to be approved before they are posted, and now i'm much less nervous about FB (DH isn't on FB, so that's not an issue).

I think i'm leaning towards letting my MIL spread the news to her family...she's bursting at the seams, might as well let her enjoy the moment, right?

I am also keeping our news off of Facebook. We live far from everyone, so I have just started individually emailing the people who matter most to me. I specifically say in each message that we are not currently planning on a Facebook announcement.

And yes, you can disable your Facebook wall so that people cannot post on it at all. I think there is also a way to set it so that if someone makes a comment and mentions you in it, you have to approve it first. But I've never tried that.

I let my parents spread the news outside my immediate family. I did ask them to wait a few weeks after I told them. The only person I was worried about saying something on FB was my dad, so I specifically told him no FB. After the first trimester, I wouldn't have cared that much if it popped up on FB but no one said anything until I actually announced at 20 wks.

I plan on leaving it up to the grapevine when it comes to extended family. I am not too concerned about FB because the only person who would post is my FIL. DH can tell him to leave it off FB.

This may be overkill, but DH and I disabled our Facebook accounts while we shared the news with our friends and family. We told my family in person one weekend, and his the following, and I announced to my boss a week after that. Since everything was spread out I didn't want to take the chance of someone we care about learning via Facebook.

@jh524: ooh didn't realize that's an option! that's a great idea. DH keeps telling me i need to forget about keeping it off of FB because there's no way I'll be able to do that...but it sounds like there IS a way!

@jh524: Ditto. I put my FB page on lock-down until we were ready to go public.

I'm not super close with my family (distance and otherwise). I just called everyone who might be insulted to read it on FB (my dad and stepmom, a few of my siblings) and specifically asked them to keep it off of social media (and specified FB).

Just tell them, no Facebook please. That's what I did and everyone respected my wishes. Also, be sure to go in your privacy setting on Fb and set it to where you get to review and approve anyones post that can appear on your page. That'll solve that!

I have a very small extended family, so i'm not concerned about sharing the news with them. However, DH's family is HUGE, and all over the country, so it's not like i'll be seeing them together. I was just wondering how you went about spreading the news to extended family...did you call everyone? send a mass email? let your parents (or in-laws) share the news? I'm letting my mom share the news with my family because she is SO excited...should i let the MIL share with her family?

One reason i'm concerned about this is I REALLY want to keep the news off of facebook, which I think might be easier if I spread the news. I'm sure i could rely upon my MIL to tell people about our no-facebook policy, I just have to make it clear how important it is to me. (Not to threadjack my own thread, but if you have any advice on how to keep the families from spreading the news on fb, i'm all ears!)
