We sleep trained. And even with sleep training there are still MOTN wake ups due to teething, sickness, development, their mood, etc. I know some people are not into sleep training, but it saved us.

DH and I did shifts (as much as possible, since I was nursing). After about a month of it, we sleep trained.

Coffee ... We had a nanny for the first year. I ended up changing her schedule to 11-5, so that I could nap when LO was taking her first nap. I work from home, which gave me that flexibility. I had a non-sleeping baby for 18 months, and I just tried to be gentle with myself (relaxed on cleaning, didn't make a ton of plans, etc.).

My LO is another one who hasn't ever slept longer than about 3 hours at a time. I basically have nights where we both just sleep all night nursing side-lying. It's not pretty.

And I found my LO had no tolerance for caffeine until recently. When she was a month old I had a cup of coffee every day and I found she lost about two hours of night sleep. So I backed off caffeine (except for the occasional Coke or ice tea).

But just now at 5.5 months she tolerates a cup of coffee totally fine. If I overindulge and have (my prepregnancy regular) a whole pot, she gets a little cranky, but a cup hasnt directly changed her sleep in a big way.

My DD is 7 months and she still for the most part sleeps only about 3 hours at a time. We had a couple of nights where she only woke up once, but my body is so used to waking up now that I was wide awake while she was asleep, so I was still super tired in the morning! Lots of coffee (in the morning after she nursed) and generally trying to stay positive.

@Ash: Honestly, even after she started STTN, you get teething, sickness, growth spurts and what not! I think it was easy that we bedshare so I just roll to my side, pop out a boob and we both fall back asleep. The worst is when she got older and nursing didn't put her back to sleep!

I def drank coffee nursing.. I think a cup or 2 a day is totally fine. I never noticed a difference!

How do y'all do caffeine if you're nursing?? I'm afraid that will keep her up!!!

We sleep trained right around 7 months. He was up every 2 hours and he was crying no matter what we did. One night after each of us trying to put him down for the night and only having about 20 minutes of success, we just let him cry it out. Best thing I could have done for him. He just really needed to figure out how to connect his sleep cycles. We also amped up his food intake and started waiting 10-15 minutes at night wake ups. He usually went back to sleep after 7.

DD didn't STTN till 8 months so I feel ya! I think I was just resolved that she was a baby and this is what babies do. I did not want to sleep train so some nights were HARD! We def took it out on each other too many times. But we both agreed that letting her get to STTN herself was worth it.

My LO is almost 9mos and has never slept more than 3.5h at a stretch. He's usually up every 90m to 2.5h every night. I am tired and forgetful. We bedshare to make it less miserable. And I make Sweetie get up with him if he's already eaten within the last 2h. But it is miserable. Very miserable.

Cry, lose my temper, get overly dramatic that I will never sleep again... Decide we should pay for a sleep consultation, then things went back to normal-ish. This applies to pretty much every sleep regression she's had in 2.5 years.
