I just started my injectables cycle last night, and I wish I had pushed harder for a nurse to show me in person yesterday. I did ask, but she pointed me to the videos. The Q-cap ended up being disastrous for us, half of the vial went all over the kitchen counter. I'm lucky that I'm only starting with half a vial. I think I need to watch the video several more times, and hope that I get the hang of mixing. The needle is no big deal, but I also had a hard time getting the plunger to move once inserted. And overall I was really frustrated with it. I hope it gets easier.

I think it depends on what kind of shot. I took Ovidrel, which is pre-mixed, and all I had to do was clean the area, stick it in and I was done. All I needed to do was watch the video twice, and I felt pretty ready to go.

As for the pain, it was minimal! DH did it for me, and the only reason it hurt at all was because he wasn't holding it steady as he pushed the fluid in. But other than that, it was totally fine! I was ready to BD right away! :)

I would agree that having a few minutes with a nurse would be a really good idea. One thing she didn't explain to me that I wish she'd gone over was where exactly on my body I should do my sub-q shots. Nothing I found online gave an exact enough explanation, and there seemed to be a spot on either side of my belly that went horribly wrong! So it would have helped if she'd shown me on my actual belly where to do it. And I didn't know until the end that my arms were an option too.

Like @swedishfish, for the IM trigger shot I had the nurse draw a circle with a sharpie and I iced the area for 10-15 minutes before and felt nothing at all! But if you're doing Ovidrel, that's just a sub-q.

@kentuckygirl: @mrsmate: I initially wanted to use the Q caps for the Menopur mixing but the PA showed me that it's easier to get every last drop with the needle. I didn't even try the Q cap. But mixing the Menopur was definitely stressful at first. The Follistim was so easy - no mixing involved!

@swedishfish: icing, great idea!

Thanks for all the responses, everybody. I'm going to ask for a nurse appt, couldn't hurt.

One more thing, I took Menopur and had learned to mix them with a needle & syringe. But when I received my meds, they included Qcaps which made the mixing easier.

I agree that mixing the meds and trying to get every drop into the syringe was initially by greatest challenge. The shots themselves were not that hard for me. I did feel the IM trigger shot was more painful. I did injections training with the nurse, so I think asking for a quick overview would be helpful (maybe on the day you go in for CD 3 bloodwork).

I watched videos online and asked for a private session with my RE's PA. I think Freedom Pharmacy has online tutorials for each type of injectable medication. I think the website is freedommedteach.com or something like that.

I iced my belly for a few minutes beforehand and that helped for me.

As for the IM trigger shot and then the PIO shots, one of the nurses drew circles on me with a Sharpie to show my husband where to inject. I iced beforehand and then used a heating pad for a few minutes after the injection. I had to do my trigger shot at 11 PM so we were on our own.

I honestly felt the sub Q injections were worse than the IM injections. I hardly felt the IM injections.

ETA - good luck!!

The only difficult part is getting all the meds into the syringe. As long as you are clear on how to do it, the actual injection is pretty easy. I didn't think it hurt too badly.

My clinic does my trigger shot so I don't have to deal with doing it myself.

As for the pain from the shot, I have a pretty high threshold of pain, too, and the shot isn't that bad.

I'm about to start IUI #1, and AF should be starting any day now. My clinic does their classes once a week, so I may need to start my meds before the class. Should I make an appt w the nurse to go over the meds, or is it pretty self explanatory? They did video tape a class and put it on the web, which I've watched and feel like I got the gist of, but maybe there's more to it than I think.

And the shots, are they really painful (esp the trigger shot)? FWIW, I seem to have a pretty high threshold for pain. With DC1 I labored for 30+ hrs at home, and thought my HSG was just mildly unpleasant.
