Wanted to update...DH is finally going to see a doctor. I found out that he scheduled an appointment on his own because he's starting to have seriously scary symptoms when he eats anything sweet. Sigh.

I hav a sweet tooth and eat a lot of cookies, candy and chocolate, but I'm also very slim and in good health. For me the main concern is the health of my teeth which arent doing too good thanks to my eating habits

Yes, having some healthy snacks on hand should definitely help! If they aren't at home, I don't typically eat them. Or I keep a sweet on hand that I wouldn't typically binge on (for me, dark chocolate) for when I want something. I keep lots of healthy snacks at my desk and if I'm really hungry, i reach for those. If i just want a cookie, I may have a couple. But there's a difference between a few cookies because it's the holidays and eating 1,000 calories worth of cookies, too.

It's hard to cut back at first because it's certainly addicting and there's a detox/weaning type process involved. But once it's down to a reasonable amount of junky snacks, it should be more manageable.

Ultimately, if he's doing it behind your back, you can't control it. But it's pretty gross, I hear you!

@spaniellove: If you are truly worried about diabetes, you can buy a glucometer at walgreens for about $20-40, no prescription necessary. Normal fasting blood sugars should be under 95 (more than 4-6 hours without eating, typically upon waking) and an hour after a meal you should be around 140. If you can get him to check his sugar once in a while, it might make both of you feel better.

@spaniellove: Be careful that you don't cause more of a problem. Sometimes I just need a bit of sweets and then I am good, I am done. But when I don't have any at home, and then I come to work and someone brought doughnuts I will eat 3 of them.

I think it would be a good idea to look at his sugar levels but his body may be able to handle it. I also would encourage you to think about how you fight this battle. You are probably never going to get him to never eat sugar and cut out cookies all together, but you can help him cut back.

I brought this up to DH while he was home just now. He says he has some of the same repulsions I have but cookies are just so easy to get ahold of. I think I need to make sure we always have something better to snack on and that he knows where to get ahold of good food around his office.

@mrbee: IIRC you might have mentioned trying to cut back on sweets/sugar in the past...if you have any ideas I'd be grateful! DH has tried substituting fruit, but as you've learned that only works in moderation.

@MrsRcCar: Generally I try to do that...we shop together and I don't buy any sweets. He seems to be getting all of them behind my back! That's part of why this is so disturbing. I actually don't recall ever seeing him eat a cookie recently. But whatever's left in the home I will have to just dump out to eliminate the temptation.

@spaniellove: Do you eat sweets? If you don't, I can see where it's hard to understand why anyone would want to eat that much. (I'm that way with my husband and spicy food - gross!)

Granted, it's not good to consume *that* much sugar on a regular basis, but if he usually eats healthy (except for the holidays), exercises regularly, and doesn't have any other health issues, then it isn't that bad.

I have a major sweet tooth, and there have been days where I eat a ton of cookies or brownies or whatever I bake that day, but I balance it out with diet and exercise.

Plus apparently he's been buying cookies every day at this store near his office...I was appalled when I found out he's been going so often that they started giving him 2 for the price of 1 - and he eats both.

He's lactose intolerant...and then wonders why he feels sick...or why he comes home and he totally crashes. Um, because he's been eating cookies all day!

DH is a HUGE sugar addict, with Diabeties in his family (!!). I simply do not buy sweets often. He used to drink a lot of soda too but I quit buying it or allowing him to buy it when we shopped for grocerys. The other thing that seemed to work for us was shopping together. In regards to things he brings home, how about portioning some out and putting the rest away from sight. Perhaps out of sight out of mind? My DH will eat sweets if they are left out. I simply put them out of sight.

your husband is delusional! could you take the cookies, add up the calories, and show him that he'd have to run X in order to burn them off?

A cookie is like, 150 calories. 10-15 minutes, at least!

I wouldn't try to stop him--he's an adult so it's his choice on what to eat. Maybe just explain why you're concerned and ask him to cut back to a reasonable amount? If it's mainly because of the holidays, I would just deal with it for now b/c Christmas treats are hard to avoid and will be gone soon.

Take them to work and give them away or throw them out! You can't make him stop eating them, but you can certainly remove the temptation.

I like sweets, too, and can easily binge on home baked goodies. But then i feel like ass later, so it's not worth it. Although about 20 cookies in the course of 3 days is 7 cookies a day plus brownies. And that's a LOT.

Help! DH has always liked cookies but I think his sugar habit is really out of control and I'm starting to worry. For example, at this time of year he gets holiday gifts from vendors that are often in the form of baked goods. Last week he got a tin of two dozen huge cookies, and a few days ago I realized that he ate twenty of them in the span of a couple days. And in that time he also ate most of a batch of brownies (at least 4 in one night). Last night he brought home another basket of extremely sweet cookies and cakes, and I worry to the point that I told him to throw it out.

People think this is "cute" because he's thin and a runner, but personally I find it disgusting. Honestly I'm pretty concerned that he's going to eat his way to diabetes! I guess I don't understand the compulsion because I hate sweets and one bite of a cookie is more than enough for a month.

What can I do to make him stop? He says he knows it's bad, but I feel like women (his mom, people at the cookie store near his office, the *#@& coworkers who are having a dessert contest at their holiday party) have reinforced the idea that a boy who likes sweets is too adorable to stop and I have to be the mean person who says no.
