@kml636: E ended up army crawling a few weeks after I posted this, at just over 8 months. We bribed him too lol. He eventually crawled trying to get my keys :) We also would put him on one side of our leg while sitting on the floor and help him learn to climb over it. I read somewhere that it helps with the coordination that they need to crawl. He army crawled for 3 weeks, switched to crawling on all 4s and at 9 months took his first steps. Now, at 10 months, he's walking all over and only uses crawling as a way to get to something to pull up on so he can walk!

@tequiero21: we did the same exact thing!

LO would "swim"-- she would be on her tummy, streeeeetch out, and wiggle side to side to move (or she would roll). I put a trail of puffs in front of her, and she would swim towards them. After 2-3 days, she started to crawl to grab them.

I never crawled. Just went straight to walking. I'm not big on trying to get babies to do things for which they aren't, personally, developmentally ready. I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it. He'll either figure it out on his own or he'll skip crawling altogether.

@Running Elley: My LO was similar at 8 months. She started pulling up right at 7 mos and loved to be vertical, walk holding hands, etc. I wasn't sure if she would ever decide to crawl but she ended up trying it right around 9 months, which is the average milestone. She mostly used it to get from one place she wanted to pull up to another, but she did develop it right on schedule.

I agree with the advice of trying to place things nearby but out of reach. Some kids like the idea of chasing moving toys--we have this inchworm (http://www.amazon.com/Kidoozie-Press-N-Go-Inchworm/dp/B000C9DYPW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369364943&sr=8-1&keywords=inchworm) which I love for that, but I am not going to credit it for teaching LO to crawl...

@Running Elley: My LO is almost 9 months and still isn't crawling. All babies go at their own pace. I too, know she is very smart and not behind developmentally. My pedi actually told me some babies do milestones at other times, and some before others or after and that's ok. I would just keep trying to distract him during tummy time.

@Running Elley: my LO is around the same age as yours. TBH I'd prefer if she skipped crawling. I do try to encourage her by placing things slightly out of reach. I use my phone cause I know she really wants that. She just loses interest in the toys, gets frustrated or figures a different way to get them.

I sometimes put my hand by her feet to give her something to push off against.

We bribed my son. My daughter was crawling like 3 months before him. So we started giving him a puff and he'd reach for it. Somehow, he kept reaching until he got it. We kept doing that and putting it further away and one day, he was crawling to get to it lol.

i've heard similar stories, but i do know that crawling (in some form) is an important milestone. my good friend's son was behind in speech and some other developmental things around 4 years old and they had him doing physical stuff along with speech therapy like army crawling and stretching his legs. he's come a long way and i learned a little about developmental milestones.

i think tummy time and encouraging him with toys would be good. i wouldn't try to make the walking a negative, but just increase his crawling practice time?

My only tip is to not pull LO's arms. Someone did that to ours and hurt him.

Some kids don't even crawl, or take their time with milestones. I'm sure your LO will figure it out when he wants to.

Yeah, I want to add. My mom told me I never crawled. I rolled around and then started walking. She said back then everyone thought if you skipped a major milestone, there was something mentally wrong. Lol I turned out fine and I have good hand eye coordination.

I'm not really sure how you can encourage him more than just putting him in his tummy and enticing him with toys. Maybe place him on his belly and put something he would really want (like your phone) just out of reach. You can give him toys that would roll away from him when he plays with them like a ball.

Good luck!

My LO is almost 8 months old and has ZERO interest in crawling. I know that he's not behind but the problem is that he is very interested in walking. He can pull himself up, he loves to stand up and he grabs onto our fingers and either walks in place or walks with us. It's cute and I'm very proud of him but we've been told by multiple people (ped included) that it's important for him to crawl since it helps with his motor skills and hand eye coordination.

When we put him on his tummy he just either rolls to his back or gets upset. He's started to reach for things while sitting up and if it's far away he'll go onto hands and knees and kind of rock but he loses interest very quickly. He'll attempt to start to scoot with his legs but he doesn't moves his hands and ends up doing an inchworm motion that goes nowhere because his upper body doesn't understand that it needs to move lol.

Are there any tips/little games or something that I can do to encourage crawling?
