How big is your town? I live in a big city and every neighborhood around here has some kind of parent online forum or listserv that's a good resource for these kind of questions. Can you ask other parents at church for recommendations?
I also second Minnie_Girls' recommendation of the NAEYC website.

@Chillybear: STARS is a state rating system for early childhood programs, it may come in handy!

@Minnie_Girl: ugh i wished i still lived near my home town... i know so many more people that would be able to help me and give me recs.

The PA website is so glitchy and the county i live in is different than the one i work in, both are massive. i did find 2 more to add to the list - theres a YMCA in my town that does infant to pre-K.

@Chillybear: Just in a different perspective, we chose a center that is close to our home (which is also close to our pediatrician). Yes, this means I have to rush to get her sometimes, but it means less time in the car for her which is nice.

We used the state's child and protective services website. It allows you to put in as many fiters you like (age, type of facility, city vs county vs zip code, etc), and it'll list out all the possibilities and any violations/deficiencies the location has. I love that I can find out if they're in compliance or not!

My sister (a second grade teacher) invited me to go with her to look at daycare/preschools when my nephew was two. What she did was find all of the places within her preferred driving range that had some good recommendations, and set up visits with all of them. That gave her a really solid idea of her options, and what direction she'd want to go in.

She ended up choosing an in-home place with a kindergarten teacher she used to work with!

A good starting place could be asking educators where they would recommend, because they probably know about most places and can give you an idea of the educational quality.

@Chillybear: We work 30 min from home, so we picked a place that was closer to work so that we wouldn't have to worry about leaving work right at 5, to fight traffic and get to the daycare before they close (ours charges $1/min for every min after 6pm). Having her daycare close to work also makes it convenient if we have to take her to the doctor during the day.

Call your state daycare licensing board. Ours was able to provide a list of every single licensed daycare within a certain distance radius from our homes and works.

Google wasn't helping me much either!!

man! I was just feeling this same way today!!! I know how to find the big name daycares, but I'd also like to research some in-home daycares that would be better on the budget and have no idea how to find them!

So i'm only 6 weeks pregnant but as I'm reading other posts on the child care board it seems like its never to early to start looking for child care, due to long waiting lists.

I haven't even told my employer yet but i know from others that have gone before me that I'll be back at work by the time baby is 10-12 weeks old.

I didn't grow up in the area I currently live in, so I'm pretty unfamiliar with the local day cares. My SIL had a baby last June and she uses a daycare she likes but can only afford 3 days/week there. (Our MIL and her father take my niece a day each). They were also on the waiting list there until she was 6 months old. My MIL is far from baby crazy and i just cant see her either watching a baby and a toddler at the same time or giving up 2 days out of her week to watch her grandchildren. My parents do not live nearby. Unless another family member steps up and volunteers, we'll need a daycare.

I started searching using google, yelp, and care dot com and they seem pretty much useless. Any good tips for finding even a starting point? At the moment I only have my niece's daycare on the list.
