@Beebug: Great questions!

I actually found boiling to work better than santize setting on the washer.

I would start with clean inserts but it probably doesn't matter if they are wet or dry.

I just used my big stock pot and filled it full and brought to a boil. From there I used tongs to push about 5-8 inserts into the boiling water. You kinda have to push them down so they absorb the water.

From there, bring back to a boil for a good 10-20 minutes. Mine you could smell it wasn't a 'fresh' boil if you know what I mean. I did them as long as I could and then refreshed the water and boiled again until they smelled clean. From there I just dumped into the dryer.

@T.H.O.U.: Ask me how much I miss the sanitize cycle? We had it on our last one, I am aprehensive of boiling. Do I wash them (I think this is obvious, yes?) and let them dry, then boil? Or when still wet? How many inserts at a time in pot? Boil for how long? Assumedly with the amount of inserts I'd be doing I'd need to replace the water a few times or more? Sorry!

We were able to preprogam a "Heavy" wash setting that we can use.

Heavy Soil
Hot Water
Pre-Rinse
Extra Rinse

If you really want to get your inserts clean, look for a santize setting on your washer or get a large pot of boiling water. I found that was the best way to get any stink out and remove any excess detergent.

@ShootingStar: You are amazing, thank-you! I had been using power wash with mine before the add of the stinky ones.

I should probably still do something to the inserts before trying what you have suggested as regular routine? I have two big laundry tubs in the house, plus bath tub, any big soaks? I feel like I don't even know where to start to get this stink out!

@Beebug: So take this with a grain of salt, but looking at your washer, here's what I would set it at:

Heavy Duty
Hot wash
Extra Heavy soil level
Extra rinse

And if you need more water, use the sopping wet towel trick :).

@ShootingStar: I have a Maytag Bravos XL (insanely huge capacity) top loading HE washer! That is a great pic! DH wants to learn the wash cycle I do for them, but I am still not settled on it yet!

@Beebug: What kind of washer do you have? There's lots of posts out there about how to get the most water out of your washer. I made this for DH, and plan to stick it on the washer, maybe it'll give you some ideas for settings for your own washer...

@Beebug: No, I didn't know either! I used a trick on that FB page to figure it out. You put a few drops of dish soap in a water bottle and shake. I forget the specifics of it, but I believe the more bubbles, the softer your water is.

@Beebug: tablespoon :) The package says to put 4 Tbsp in if you need to soak them and 1 Tbsp in each wash if you want to keep the funk out. I have had a really hard time with this over the past few months and Funk Rock seems to be the only thing that helps.

@grizz: How do I know if I have hard or soft water? Am I an idiot for not knowing? I will check out that fb page, thank-you!

@grizz: Thanks for the extra water tips, awesome!!!

@Orvis18: TBS? I had a front loading HE, and when we moved last month I got us a top loading HE. I loveeeee it for everything else, except for diapers. Diapers are not forver, lol....but I need to figure out my current problem :p

I agree with the Funk Rock and I've actually started throwing a TBS in the rinse load each time I wash. I also throw a towel or two in with each load (I have a front loader too) and use Heavy Wash setting. I notice that I need to wash mine every other day, even though I could go longer with the # of diapers we have, to keep the stink out.

@looch: Yes!

I forgot to mention - I trick my HE machine by setting it to bulky wash, heavy soil. I also throw a sopping wet towel in there with them. If you have your washing machine manual, you might be able to determine the setting with the most water, and then trick it with the towel. Some people also pour in extra water through the detergent drawer.

There might be a way that you can trick the programming on your front loader to add more water.

Do you have hard water or soft water? A product like Rockin Green's Funk Rock might get it out. Or stripping with lots of hot washes with a capful of Calgon softener if you have hard water...It will allow the fibers to open up and release the funky buildup. I would stay away from Dawn if you have an HE washer, since it can break it.

There's also a cloth diaper washing guru on Facebook I rely on - Mimi's Cloth Diaper Help Q&A is her page. She answers all my wash routine questions!

I recently purchased some second hand BG pockets. I wanted to beef up my stash for back to work, and LO to daycare.

I did a double cycle of washing and rinsing and thought I did a crazy thorough job of making sure they were good to go. They came pretty clean from the seller and I had confidence they would be fine. Once used they have that god-awful smell, ammonia, barnyard, I'm not sure. I thought that smell was the same thing, but as per some googling it seems one can be from too much detergent, one can be from not enough?

My bigger problem? The inserts are now intermingled with my formerly perfect stash.

This weekend (long weekend!) I am going to attack them all.

Where should I start? I definitely believe it's the inserts I need to get, and that the pockets are fine.

I am also struggling with my top-loading HE washer, trying to ensure there is enough water in there.

Help!
