I would bring a thermos. We always have a thermos when we travel to keep things cold or warm. Whatever you do, don't bring individual size milk with you on carry on. This probably varies with different countries and different airports though. I didn't have this problem living abroad, my airport now (I think JFK is the same) makes me open all containers that contain liquids so they can check the contents. Is there a powder version of the milk?

I suggest contacting TSA as well as the airline because I think that getting through security is going to be the problem. I don't know if icepacks are allowed but know they don't allow gel inserts in shoes so it is worth checking. I also second the suggestion of trying to get the milk in smaller juice-box size at least for the trip itself.

If you go the thermos route, also put ice in the thermos to chill it down before you put the milk into it.

I think the easiest thing to do is to bring zip locks and fill them with ice at the airport and then ask for more on the flight. You know that you'll always be able to get ice. Then you don't have to worry about ice packs through security or the flight attendants storing your milk.

Can you find it in single serving packages at all? That's how I transport milk on flights. Do you have to bring enough with you for the duration of your trip? The usual recommendations are to only bring enough for your travels and I wouldn't feel comfortable transporting that in checked luggage, so you might need a bigger exception than you think.

I wouldn't count on the FA's being able to store anything for you. They usually don't have extra room for that kind of stuff, so I'd call ahead and ask. As an example, on one flight I was on, there was no microwave to heat anything up.

I'd bring a thermos and a soft sided cooler that you can fold up. Also bring ziplocks and ask for ice. Most restaurants will give it to you no problem and you can replenish it on the plane easily.

I don't see why ice packs wouldn't be allowed. If they are the hard block variety and in a soft-sided cooler they shouldn't consider that a liquid. If they give you trouble about it, just have an extra ziploc on hand so you can put the ice packs in there as a "liquid". Or, now that I mentioned ziploc bags it made me think that if you have a few extra ziplocs you could probably ask the flight attendants to fill them with ice for you and use that to keep the milk cool in a soft-sided cooler. I think they would be more accommodating with that request than if you ask to store it in their fridge.

you'd have to double check to see if these are allowed, but these lunch packs are awesome:
http://www.amazon.com/PackIt-Freezable-Lunch-Bag-Forget/dp/B004SIX9YY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343698431&sr=8-1&keywords=freezer+pack+lunch+box

you keep it in your freezer and it has built in gel packs in the lining so it keeps the contents cold without additional packs.

i will say, though, that international flight attendants are usually super accommodating, especially towards families. they'd probably store it for you in the refrigerator without hesitation!

Could you bring some dry ice? Dry ice is allowed on planes. Then just ask for ice either on the plane or at one of the food places in the airport. Then you can keep the cooler at your seat instead of asking them to put it in their fridge.

You probably only need a little chunk of dry ice since you need it to be cold and not frozen.

Well, I know you wanted to pack light. This isn't exactly light packing if you have to bring dry ice and a soft-sided cooler.

@Mrs. Bee: what type of milk does Charlie drink? I can't remember if he is drinking soy milk or something else? Is his milk from the refrigerator section or the shelf? I know some rice and soy milks are on the shelf - could you just take it room temperature? Would he drink it like that?

@jessiejo17: Oh good point - medically needed!
See if you can get a doctors note about it??

I brought breastmilk on the plane, I packed a cooler full of ice and put my frozen milk in it. I just told the TSA agent before it went through the scanner that I had milk for my son in there. They said that was fine. So yes, ice is allowed.

I agree that ice packs might be tricky to get through security; if you want a similar effect, I think you can use frozen peas or other food though.
I second the suggestion of talking to the airline in advance and, if possible, get some agreement in writing. I'd also have a doctor's note with you about Charlie's allergy and the medical necessity of bringing your own milk, just in case you get hassled for bringing a liquid.
Any chance hemp milk comes in juice box sizes so you could only open one container at a time?

I would totally expect that the flight attendants would be willing to either put it in their fridge for you... or keep you stocked with ice to pack around the milk. I actually would think ice packs would not be allowed through security. The instant ones are essentially liquid so that wouldn't fly. And I wouldn't think the solid ones would stay cold long enough even if they were allowed.

Since it's an international flight, check with the plane about dietary restrictions. I would think they would allow it to be stored with them as it is medically necessary and cow milk is not an option. No harm in calling and checking!

I think a thermo would be tricker with the liquid restrictions.

I am going to take Charlie's hemp milk with me on a 12 hour flight. It doesn't have to be refrigerated until I open it. But how do I keep it cold once I'm on the plane?

My options are:

- bring ice packs on the plane (I think they're allowed?)

- Will the plane keep it in the fridge for me?

- I could keep cold milk in a thermos (should keep for up to 24 hours), but then I'd have a thermos to carry around and I'm trying to pack light.

Charlie is allergic to cow's milk so we have to bring our own milk. Not bringing milk is not an option, as he is a milk addict and it will help him sleep.

Any suggestions?
