The very best red I've found is actually drugstore. It's L'oreal Color Riche in True Red. Its really a nice rich red. It's not too orangry or bright.

http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemId=70995/Colour_Riche_in_True_Red/LOreal/Lipstick

And, of course, the old classic. MAC Russian Red or even Ruby Woo, which is a similar color but in a matte finish.

@MrsKoala: I would definitely recommend the lipstick -- it's very moisturizing, which is key for me. I'm just not sold on the color. It could just be that I'm not used to something so bold, though. I'm really trying to branch out of my makeup rut but it's a little scary!

@MrsSCB: Oh! I like Too Faced but I've never tried their lipstick. I've only used their bronzer and undereye concealer.

I think it was this one: http://www.sephora.com/la-creme-P374933 It was definitely that brand, i'm just not remembering the name. That looks like the only red in that brand on the Sephora site, though, so process of elimination! :-)

@MrsKoala: Haha, now I kind of wish I saw that before buying my lipstick. I might actually try the return thing at Sephora to see how that works and pick a different shade...

It really depends on your skin tone! My suggestion is to go to the MAC counter at a department store. MAC has the best shades of red in my opinion and they can help you find one that compliments the skin tone. Personally, I like Russian Red by MAC as it's matte and a good neutral color.

I just recently bought my own red lipstick -- I was a little scared of it but DH like it, haha. Here's a good overview about picking one for your skintone: http://thebeautydepartment.com/2012/07/best-red-lip-shades-for-your-skin-tone/

If you go somewhere like Sephora, you can test them out and you might also be able to find a good consultant to help you. I've also heard that if you buy one, take it home, and aren't happy, Sephora will take back almost anything. Even if you already used it they'll give you a refund or store credit. I've never tried this but my friend says she does it all the time when she's trying new products.

I would go to a counter and test them out since there are so many shades of reds! :-) I think a warm red would look great on you!

I'd love to try a red lipstick, but I have no idea what shade (if any) would look good on me. Should I just go to a makeup counter or is it possible to pick it out in the store myself?
