I think they just know instinctively? I dunno. I kinda wondered that myself too!

@daniellemybelle: HAHAHA! Uncle daddy! That's too cute!

I think it's only really going to be an issue if people other than the parents are caring for LO right from the beginning. Isn't it by four weeks or something they can recognise parents faces? And obviously the smell thing would happen quite young too- I'm sure most exhausted parents of newborns are fairly stinky the first week or two:)
Oh and most of my nephews and nieces (DH's side) call MIL Ma, because they hear most of the grownups doing that. They still know who she is, in relation to themselves, they just think that's her name:)

I think a lot of it may be how humans instinctually act towards our own children. Even if a childcare provider is very devoted and loving, the way a parent feels and acts towards their child without even thinking about it must be communicated.

@joyjoy: My nephew calls his uncle Uncle Daddy, haha! Now THAT'S a confused family! :)

I've always wondered this, too, especially now that I have a slightly confused cousin. He's an only child, and as he was learning to talk and distinguish his relatives, he followed what he heard. This led to him thinking that the four boy cousins closest in age to him, who are all brothers, were his own brothers because he always heard them calling each other that. He still thinks this at age 4. There are only four girl cousins in my family, and we're all his "sisters". He also calls all the aunts Mom because he hears the other cousins calling them Mom. Somehow the uncles are all Uncle, except one who he switches between calling Dad and Uncle. We always joke that the people at his school must think his family is polygamist because he has one dad, five moms, four brothers and four sisters.

In spite of this, you can tell that he's always known who his actual mom and dad are, even though he calls other relatives the same thing.

Haha ok, I do talk to her too. I guess I am just skeptical that talking is the main way that babies know who their parents are!

I feel like our kids have always known who mommy and daddy are, even when they've had other childcare providers that spend even more time with them.

How do babies with nannies know who the parents are? You'd think at least some of them would get confused, but from I hear that almost never happens.
