The thing I've heard about how to handle questions like this is to give as much straightforward, factual information as you think they might be ready to hear, and to only answer their initial question. So at that age, I might have started with something like, "Moms have eggs inside them and then one egg grows into a baby in a special place in women called a uterus." And if they're happy with that, let it go until there are more questions. But if there are immediately more questions, just keep answering as naturally as possible. So, if the next question is, how does it turn into a baby? You might say, "when the mom and dad are ready, men have something called sperm in their bodies and the sperm joins with the egg and gets it ready to be a baby." You don't have to jump to an extensive explanation of sex necessarily unless your kiddo is ready or asks something like, well how does the sperm get to the egg?

This thread has made me LOL. I had a similar conversation @alphagam84
But my DH was like “what on earth happened” when he walked into my 7 yo saying “so if I’m really happy on a ride at Disney world, will the white pre come out of my penis??” Hahah

We actually had a similar conversation between my 9 and 6 year old boys at the dinner table this week. 6yo said “how do babies get into a mom’s tummy” and before I could say anything 9yo stepped in and said “well they aren’t big babies when they get in there, they start small and get big, right!?” Which we agreed to. We basically ended up having a conversation about cells dividing and specializing instead of a sex talk. I’m feeling super grateful towards my 9yo for changing the convo. We haven’t had this talk really before but I feel like them knowing about cells a little might help 🤷‍♀️

@alphagam84: I've had the same conversation with my boys (7 and 9) in the past few weeks, and the questions they asked were hilarious. "Did you and Dad have to do that? Was it gross?" and "Were the doctors in the room when you did it?" were two memorable ones. Then the other morning my son showed up in my room with a lightsaber and yelled "Ok mom I'm ready to put my penis in your vagina!" so we had to do a little bit of damage control there.

We also got a few books - It's Not the Stork and It's So Amazing - that we've been looking through.

We just tell them the truth in terms they understand. My kids are 8 & 5 and we were talking about it the other night. They know the girls have eggs and boys have sperm and the boy puts the sperm in the girl and she grows the baby. My 5 year old asked how the sperm gets in the girls and I told him the boy puts the penis in the girls vagina and it shoots out. My daughter looked horrified as she asked if that meant we were naked when we made them and I confirmed we were :D If you just make it regular parts of convo and don't make it weird, it's not hard to explain.

My 6 year old surprised me with this question this morning.
My spur-of-the moment answer was a daddy and mommy and god make a baby.
Her: "does god cut open the mom's belly to put the baby in there?".
Me: No, (not wanting to get real in depth 5 minutes before she gets on the bus). It's magic, now lets go get ready.

Lol. Help! How did you explain at this young age?
