My phone photos automatically go to Google Photos. Every once in a while (every two months) I copy them to my external hard drive.

Photos that I take on my camera are stored on my Computer hard drive, external hardrive, and then uploaded to SmugMug.

I also have a instagram account for my daughter that is private and only has family members (less than 10) that follow it. I do that for automatic Chatbooks and as another backup option.

Previously, my computer hard drive failed and I lost about 50% of all my digital pictures from 2000-2014 - even after an expensive data recovery process - so I am especially diligent about photo backups.

@NorthStar: haha. sounds like my husband with his PCs. Good luck! Typically most online or cloud based systems organize by date or when the photo was taken. But you can go in a manually change things. But I find that the time sorting works pretty well. Google photos actually has a pretty amazing search function. its like magic!

@Littlebit7: we do have an external, so I do backups, but need to get better used to how macs work. lol. I'm such a PC person, which I know isn't the norm for photography

@NorthStar: you should be able to create a backup of your PSE catalog by adding a simple external hard drive. I'm not super familiar with PSE, but I think there are options under your menu for saving your catalog on an external. You should have to do anything sorting wise, it will just basically run a mirror image of your working catalog in PSE, and add new stuff every time you back up.
Id start with that. The investment is minimal (external drives are SUPER cheap). Then whenever you get internet, you can easily do google photos.

@Littlebit7: That is my issue too. I have PS Elements and organize all my camera (and most iphotos) through there. I have a photo for every month so that I can easily find what I need. So, I have no clue how that correlates to what is backed up online. Would I have to reorganize everything there?

We don't have internet at our house, so I can't easily just back up photos online. But, we are looking at options, so once we have it, this is my priority as I don't want to lose photos either!

I do a lot of backups across a lot of programs. I've lost my photos once before back in 2008, and I vowed never again.
So:
I used to use Aperture and have that library backed up on my mac and an External drive along with my time capsule
Now I use lightroom, and back that up to an external drive.
My phone photos are backed up to iCloud and amazon.
I know its a tad bit of overkill, but photography is my hobby. I'd hate myself for a very very long time if I lost my photos.

@Ajsmommy: haha I'm glad you're happy with it. Tip: my husband and I share a prime account - I'm just a secondary user. We both log into his account on our Amazon photos apps and both of our phones upload to his Prime account. Now we can see what pictures each of us have taken! I'm the one who usually prints pictures so it's a huge help for me.

@HappyBaker: I go through regularly and delete "bad" videos.

Google photos - I believe they store at a lower resolution but I'm okay with that. I stopped backing up to hard drive b/c I don't even turn on my computer! I'm also going to do a year book next year to have "hard copies" of memorable photos.

My phone photos automatically upload to both Shutterfly (with the app) and to google photos - I believe that's also an app but came with my Motorola phone.
I do have an external drive that I probably yearly will move files over to, but I usually just do this to get old files off my Mac and clear up space.
I'm really awful about hooking my phone up to my computer and moving things over.

@Mamaof2: I just did it and it was SO easy! You download the Amazon Prime Photos app, log in, and it just starts scraping your phone for photos. The only issue I have is it only gives you 5gb for videos / other files so all my videos couldn't get backed up.

I am awful at keeping up to date with the latest OS's / Software Updates for both my Mac and my iPhone, primarily because I don't regularly back up my files or photos so it always takes me a while to get everything backed up / ready for a new update in case it blows up.

What's your process for keeping a back up of photos and files from your phone or computer? Cloud? External hard drive? Do you do it daily / weekly / monthly? Talk me through this please!

Edited to add - do you then delete the photos from your phone? I'm always scared to do this but running out of space! Ha. I clearly have tech trust issues.
