@agold: lol it is driven by personality!!! My guy is a good listener and it still took a lot of work. Telling him to sit again and again. Then if he didn't sit it was time to get out. I would ask "are you done? Because you're standing and when you're standing you're telling me you're done" it took conditioning but he finally got it.

@Anagram: Thanks for explaining what you do! I worry about my girl slipping while standing. She grabs the edge of the tub and pulls herself up. I tried to get a non-slip pad but they have suction cups. Well, my tub has a textured bottom so the suction cups don't work. But I don't trust the textured bottom to be sufficient to keep her from slipping. Clearly I'm a wreck over here!

@ShootingStar: Ditto on the weird textured tub.

@Portboston: Please tell me how to teach my 9 month old not to stand in the tub! I also want to learn how to teach her to tilt her head back so I can rinse her hair like someone commented above. But she's totally won't even let me see her teeth when I ask her, so I'm assuming she doesn't take direction very well. :silly:

We were in the big tub much earlier then that. We taught him he's not allowed to stand in the tub. At almost 2, we rarely have standing issues.

@Anagram: I worry about DD hitting her head. Bathtubs are slippery and dangerous, even for adults. She's not quite 10m and can only stand for a few seconds on her own, so she's not very steady yet. We've tried mats in the tub, but our tub is a weird shape and texture I guess, so they don't really suction to it.

With that said, when it's just DS (3.5) we just sit on the closed toilet. But when it's both I sit on the floor and let them sit and play together and only intervene when she's trying to pull up.

@Anagram: My no standing was mainly because I just worry about my kid slipping and smashing her face or chin on the edge of the tub or on the toy containers suctioned to the side. (My kid is also clumsy). I'm pretty stingy with my bath water filling...have only recently started adding more water. But either way she has never cared about the water level. 19 months old.

Every time I see this thread because it pops back up to the top, I keep reading because I can't figure out why so many parents say they have to squat or kneel next to the tub for so long. Are you guys holding your kids the entire time they are in the bath? Or is it trying to keep water out of their faces that takes a long time?

So, we just sit either on the tub ledge or on the closed toilet and read our phones while they play--that's been since LO2 was 6 months or so. And before that, LO2 was in the baby tub on an incline, so I still didn't need to hold on to her constantly.

We just let them play (sitting or standing, we don't care, as long as they are having fun and not hitting each other, haha) for about 15 minutes, and then we quickly lean over the tub and soap them up and do their hair--we rinse with the detachable shower head. Our kids don't care if water gets in their face, which is good because we spray directly on their heads and a ton of water does get in their face--and then we're done. It's like...maybe 1-2 minutes of leaning over a little? I usually make them stand because then I don't have to lean at all.

And then we're done. If we are in a hurry, they just shower, so they are standing the whole time.

Maybe it's because we don't have a ton of water in the tub. Do most of you have a lot of water in the tub, and are you afraid of your kids falling over and their faces being covered with water? Is that why there are so many "no standing" rules?

Washing hair we soap up the boys heads and then use a wet wash cloth to wipe the soap off. It takes a while but not bad and DS1 has long thick hair. Around 2 we could get him to close his eyes and dump water over his head. We use those buckets with the flexible edge to minimize water in the face.

@agold: I think I stopped using the baby tub at around 6 months when she was able to sit well unassisted and started using the laundry basket. Once I started using the laundry basket I would tilt her head back to wash her hair and she had the side of the laundry basket to support her back while I supported her neck with one hand and use handheld showerhead to spray with the other hand. Every time I tilted her head back to rinse I would say "put your head back, let's wash your hair" and I can't remember exactly when but after maybe a couple months? (She's 13 months now) whenever I say put your head back she would just do it without me having to physically tilt her head back for her.

A friend of mine got the idea from our pediatrician's office to tape a character picture on the ceiling and when she rinsed her daughter's hair she would say where's Daniel tiger and her Dd would look up at the ceiling to look for Daniel.

The laundry basket is seriously genius Bc I would soap her in a few quick minutes, rinseher off, then with one arm lift her up while w the other hand tilt the laundry basket so the soap water can drain out in a second since there are so many huge holes for the water to flow out of, place the basket back down, place her back in and fill it a few inches for her to play while I sat on the closed toilet or the bath mat on the floor next to her. Makes the actually washing part super fast and stress free. With all those baby tubs and inflatable tubs the soap water takes forever to drain and after rinsing the soap off the baby still sits in some soap water.

Starting around 6 months, my kiddo was primarily bathed by showering with me. Before she was walking, I'd just let her crawl around at my feet while I showered, then hold her to wash her. Now that she's 21 months, she happily plays with her toys, and then I soap her up and she rinses off.

We used this inflatable duck in our bathtub - for me, this is the best product ever made for bath time - works great and lifts up the tub height so there's a lot less bending over!

I use a knee pad made for gardening and kneel right down next to the tub. DS used to stand and crawl in the bath too, I would just keep a hand on him and make him sit down. Shallow water is important cause if they do loose their balance they will fall right under. I'll never forget the wading pool when he was just walking last year (15-16 months). He would walk in, fall and go under. When I scooped him up he would just laugh and do it again!

@agold: Also, my brother and SIL have 3 kids, and they were so careful not to get water on their faces when they were little. They now have a 9 year old, 7 year old, and 4 year old, and none of them will allow for their faces to get wet in any capacity. So I'm all about throwing them in head first

@agold: Yes! Sit on the side of the tub with your feet in it. You can use a bath mat to step out once you're finished. Plus...it gives me a mini-soak to help my feet feel good after a long day!

And as for getting her hair washed, we did a trial by fire. We dumped water right over both of our kids' heads from the start. Face and all. It surprises them at first, but both LOVE water now and aren't afraid to get their faces wet. For context, I have a 4.5 year old and a 20 month old. DS2 hates the act of me washing his head with soap, but loooooves me dumping water over his head.

I first want to say that I totally misread this. I saw 9.5 old and immediately thought 9.5 YEAR old. My facial expression was literally

Now that I've gotten out of that mindset, we bathe both boys in our soaking tub. I know that it's likely bigger than your bathtub, but I've always stood in the bath with both of them. I am fully clothed and just stand while I bathe them. It's so much easier to hold onto them and I position myself behind them so that as they're playing, if they slip backwards, my legs are there to catch them if I need half a second to grab them. It has always worked really well for me.

At that stage (crawling), we put the baby tub in our shower, and he bathed as we showered. Then from about 12 months on, once he could walk, he showers with us too.

I imagine we'll have to stop about age 2 because of memories? I usually wear underwear in the shower with him, and now a sports bra because I'm trying to wean.

I also taught her to put her head back to rinse her hair since very young. And I sing songs while I rinse her hair. I also rotate bath toys daily, just 2-3 squirt toys or cups would do the trick.
But yes I'm really strict about no standing especially Bc she still can't stand steady for long yet. And we have a nonslip mat for my 4 y/o son and had a faucet cover until just recently when he was 3 maybe. We'll need the faucet cover again soon for the 1y/o

I just let my kids stand when they wanted....and we don't even have a non-slip mat or anything. Or a faucet cover. I guess we are risk takers. :silly:

But seriously, with our oldest, we kept her in the baby tub inside our big tub until she was almost 2 and little sister was born. She would just sit up in it. After LO2 was born, I put our oldest in the big tub and put the baby in the baby tub (still inside the big tub) so I could do bathtime together. As soon as LO2 was 6 months, I stopped using the baby tub and both girls were in the big tub. My mom always taught me that the water should only go up to the belly button of the youngest kid, so that even if they lay down/fall down backward, the water won't cover their face. We still follow that rule, so I feel fine with them standing, playing, whatever. We haven't had any major accidents, so it's all worked out. And both girls love bathtime and have no problems with us pouring water over their heads.

For the longest time, I took a bath with LO until he could sit up on his own in the tub. I probably used the infant tub twice. Now, we have a no-slip bath mat. He loves to stand (he's almost 2) in the bath and it's a battle I don't want to fight.

I got a no slip mat and let my kid stand in the big tub. She still stands about half the time at 20 months.

Once DD1 outgrew her tub, one of us would wash her in the shower. This was not her favorite way to get washed, but she got over it. I felt nervous about washing her in the regular bath when she wasn't super good at sitting up- I thought she would slip under!

We really stressed not letting our sons stand. I mean they still did it but we would continually make them sit down and give them fun toys like stacking cups to distract them into sitting. The blow up tub makes me feel safer if they do stand because it has inflated bumpers as opposed to slipping and banging their head on the big tub. If you don't like bending over, you can sit on the edge of the tub itself or get a cheap low IKEA stool.
