You don't have to spend $$$ on a bike, but you should try them out and have someone who knows what they are doing put them together. I own a Giant commuter bike and it was maybe $500, but I haven't had a single issue with it, it's lightweight, and it does what I need it to. I hated my cheaper Walmart bike. Do you want one to ride on trails? Commute? Just ride around the neighbourhood? If you're just looking for a comfy and casual bike, i would think about a cruiser. If you want to go on the trails then i would go with something more of a mountain bike. I bought a bike 3 years ago at a bike shop and I'm glad I tried it. I'm average height and thought I would need a small bike but needed a medium one. If you go to a dedicated bike shop, they almost always sell used bikes, so you could get a better deal that way and they usually provide some sort of guarantee or tune ups. We went to a bike shop and I was very specific with what I wanted (a bike that was comfortable to ride a few miles on paved roads/paths).
